Saturday afternoon football and other team sports must have originated in the days when Saturday mornings were taken up with work. 3pm gives people time to get get home for dinner (lunch) have a pint and get to the match. In the 50s and 60s Barnsley would kick off at 3:15 allowing supporters time to get from the pub, which closed at 3pm plus 10 minutes supping up time, to the game. Other licensing authorities had closing times for pubs at 2:30. They then opened again at 5:30. This was the case in Sheffield where pubs opened of an evening at 5:30 to tempt workers knocking off after 5pm.

Of course before floodlights in the winter months kick off time had to be brought forward to get the game completed before it got dark. This happens now in local leagues.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that when we first had the floodlights we used to kick off midweek games at 7:15 p.m.
