I like Cauley and thought he put in a real shift today whilst still not being back to his most fluid, sweet hitting best. But Ivan Toney is a better all round striker. I doubt there’s a manager in the Championship would choose Woodrow over Toney if given the choice. And there’s no shame in that because Toney is some player.
I don’t agree. He’s come on brilliantly but Woodrow is the better player/striker. Toney plays for a far far better team than Woodrow, .
But Toney also considerably outscored Woodrow in League One playing for a poorer side. 24 goals in 32 games is an insane return.
it is a great return but I think Peterborough would take issue with you calling them a poor league 1 side.
so your example is 3 players which according to transfermarkt never scored or missed any in their club career? Most strikers, of which none of your examples are. Score most pens it’s basically a guaranteed goal, it’s a shock when a goalie saves one not the other way around
I just looked at he’s scored/assisted over 16goals for 4 years, he was scoring whilst Cauley had 2 awful loans out and barely scored. I’m shocked people compare them. Toney also didn’t have big Keef lumping balls right onto his feet in league 1
The expected goal for a penalty is 0.78. So you'd expect players on average to miss one in five. To add to the debate, Toney is probably a better all round striker than Woodrow. But we shouldn't be using that as a stick to beat Cauley with.
It was certainly my favourite ever first game of a season but our promotion to the Premiership was my favourite, the whole rollercoaster and the coming together of the town. Not sure if I will ever experience that high again but still hopeful we can win the FA cup final in my lifetime!!
no he didn’t. He scored 16/44. Woodrow scored 16/31. I’m not making this an anti Toney piece. The lad has come on strides since his 2 goals in 21 games for us. I think he looks a lethal striker. I just think Woodrow is the all round better footballer. Can’t believe he’s re-signed for us (I’d question his ambition for that weird decision because we’re going nowhere with this lot ‘in charge’) but I’m delighted he has.
He will have other opportunities to move clubs I'm sure. Did come out of the blue that year extension though.
Sign another contract and we’ll let you go next year, would be my suspicion. Nothing wrong with that, in fact I see it as a positive step.
I think Toney’s a better all round player. I do think a lot of Reds fans find it hard to judge him for what he is now rather than what he was like on loan a few years ago
I was referring to last season. Where there were still 11 games to play so you would probably have put decent money on him breaking the 30 league goals barrier. It’s a debate that’s been done to death and it isn’t much fun to be seen ‘arguing’ against one of your current players - especially one you really like and rate. But just out of interest, what attributes make Woodrow the better all round footballer? I think he’s a better player outside the box dropping in to midfield (hence the Number 10 role), arguably a similar quality of finisher (although goals suggest otherwise), but he isn’t as good in the air, doesn’t have the same pace, can’t hold the ball up as well, run the channels as well, be as effective defending set pieces, be as big a threat from set pieces, be an outlet to relieve pressure or be an out ball, etc. I want to say Woodrow is a better crosser of the ball and would be better on direct free kicks, but then I seem to remember Toney pinging in 25 yarders for Peterborough.
