Absolutely. We have the personnel for that. Woodrow/Chaplin up top. Brown and probably Thomas as wingers. Mowatt and Dougall/Halme in the middle. The centre backs and keeper is the problem, but whatever formation we play that remains so.
Indeed! We tried to get the song going yesterday, but it didn't catch on. We've got to do something, surely we can't go on like this?
Big fan of Brown. He didn't play very well yesterday, but he was far from the worst. There is, however, a sensible and rational argument that had he scored the chance he missed there could have been a very different outcome to the game. We were 2-0 down, Portsmouth were cruising and we'd done less than nothing. From nowhere Woodrow scored a wonder goal. Viewing it from behind the goal it was unstoppable, dipping and serving all over the place. Two minutes later the ball is crossed to Brown, he controls it and places it wide. Portsmouth go up the other end to make it 3-1 and game over. Brown missing that chance doesn't make him a poor player. Yes he should have scored, but he made a mistake. Better players have missed easier chances. But, after dominating the game, had Portsmouth found themselves level they could easily have fallen apart. I've seen it many times before. Had we got anything out of the game it would have been entirely unfair. But football like life doesn't work on fairness
I like Brown and he's been one of our few consistently decent players this season, but he's also getting into the habit of missing sitters that are costing us games. He missed an even easier chance at Swansea that arguably cost us 2 points. I give our defence a fair amount of stick when it's warranted but the front players missing good chances contribute as much to us not winning games as the defenders making mistakes. After 32 games in all comps we're still making the same errors - will they ever learn?
I have been saying it a while now about Mowatt and Brown. And been berated for saying it. They provide little. Other posters are now starting to see what I’ve been saying.
I think we should switch to this system, if teams are cancelling us out, like yesterday. Both Oduor & Jordan Williams were isolated, as the team was too narrow. With the same players you could push Woodrow & Chaplin up top, Thomas & Brown out wide, allowing the full backs to overlap. I can't see it happening though, as GS seems set on playing this one formation. If you are as good as Liverpool you can play 4-3-3 every week, knowing your players are better than the opponents. We are not in that position unfortunately & tactics win matches. I'll be interested to read @Red Rain 's analysis.
