Or the home game against Ipswich in 1996.
Or the home game against West Ham in 1997.
In all the years I've watched Barnsley, there hasn't been a single regular goalkeeper who hasn't made a mistake leading to a goal for the opposition. Not a one. Then again, I haven't seen any goalkeeper from internationals to the most inexperienced youngsters manage it, either.

The only other serious mistake I saw him make was against Luton in the L1 season where he misjudged a cross which hit the woodwork and bounced out to be tapped in.

He's played over 20 games now. I don't think thats too bad a rate for a young lad.

Exactly so, any mistake made by "the last line of defence" will invariably lead to a goal. It has always been this way.

Maybe its because I am a bit young and there wasnt the TV coverage but I cant ever remember seeing Gordon Banks make a mistake - I am sure he did prior to his international call up but I never saw him make one
All the other England keepers have their fair share of howlers over the years though, never mind Barnsley ones.

Maybe we should start dropping strikers every time they miss an easy chance or defenders whenever they make a mistake that leads to a goal

I remember an incompetent referee saving Gordon's blushes for an error he made against Northern Ireland. George Best cleverly took the ball off him and the referee wrongly disallowed the goal.

Yes, terrible decision by the ref, Best clearly nicked the ball off Banks as he was in the act of punting the ball upfield. The ball was in the air and not in Banks's hands, the goalkeeper shouldn't be treated any different to an outfield player once the ball is out of his hands.

It was pointed out at the time that had the incident taken place between Manchester United & Stoke City, the goal would've stood.

Ah I remember that now - yes at the time it was the wrong decision. I think the rules have been changed now and it is no longer allowed to do that as the ball is still deemed to be in the goalkeepers control between leaving the hand and hitting the boot

It was a mistake and a pretty bad one but it happens to everyone. It shouldn't have even led to a goal to be honest but oduor (i think) had completely lost his man leaving him all alone to get the ball.

For the first goal should we drop the defender who comically slid across the floor nowhere near ball or player causing the goal?

Every player makes mistakes and always will. If Walton made too many I'd say drop him but one or two is nothing to worry about, it happens, it will always happen, and there's nothing you can do about it except get behind the player

Anybody can make a mistake as Captain Hook said when he wiped his backside with the wrong hand.!

Not advocating that he should be dropped after that one error error, but he needs it impressing upon him
that in future, he should concentrate more and excersise extreme caution. When you are under the cosh, the
last thing you need, is your keeper making your task harder by literally giving the opposition a
    goal.

It wasn't even a strange situation that he found himself in. If you watch his warm up before every
game ,you will see his coach hoisting the ball across the penalty area, similar to how it was
crossed by their full back last night.

With no member of the opposition in sight, it's hard to comprehend what was going through his
mind to cause him to fumble the ball and present it on a plate for their goal scorer.
All round, it was very disappointing and just took the edge off a credible away team performance.

    Bump.

Let’s all be glad OP isn’t our Head Coach or we’d have lost this game 7-1

    Afternoon.

Not watched the game as been at work today BarnsleyReds,

I’ll watch back the highlights. I have been told he’s made 2 cracking saves and it was a point gained today as opposed to 2 lost so if he’s saved us then credit where credit is due .

I stand by my point he is still suspect at times and hopefully he’ll learn from that.
