It's disingenuous dross, inherently contradictory and oh so insincerely humble. I accept he has the right but he certainly does not deserve respect for exercising it. Very surprised Whelan has tolerated it.
Same here. Anyone who's been to a warzone to fight as part of our army is brave. But when I think of Remberance Sunday and the Poppy I think of the millions of men who defended our own country in two world wars and had no choice in the matter. Not those since who've joined the army for a career and helped out foreigners in other countries.
I agree with yer Grandad. A lot didn`t get help from the legion after WW2 from what I`ve been told over the years.
Not for one minute do i believe he put this letter together. His reasons are a slap in the face to men and women from our Country including Ireland who gave their lives for our freedom.Derry and Bloody Sunday was a disgrace but thats not what the Poppy is about .If i were Wigan not only would he not have been on the bench tonight but he would be out of the club.He insults all fans in our country who lost Family members fighting in two world wars ......very happy to keep putting notes with the queens face on into his pocket............
Echoed exactly my grandads words. It's why we still don't wear poppies. It'd feel wrong to go against his wishes. His view was that if it'd been up to them it would have gone back to exactly to what it was before. And if he wanted to remember his fallen comrades he would just close his eyes. He always said the NHS was the best memorial for his dead mates.
People have a right to do what they want (thankfully) Other people have a right to criticise them for it.
Re: People have a right to do what they want (thankfully) Bound to be an emotive subject. I personally like to remember that the war efforts have ultimately been about protecting freedom, and preserving the rights we have today. Disappointing to hear some of the negative responses to the statement, but I understand freedom of speech works both ways. I support peace, not division. But I still got hammered by some, when I chose to wear a white poppy.
You don't, to my knowledge, make statements stating that one set of soldiers is different to another. In that respect his statement is all of those things.
Don't like his reasoning at all. The wearing of the poppy has nothing whatsoever to do with Bloody Sunday. The Nationalists in Ireland have chosen to use it as an anti-British symbol in much the same way as the Muslims burned a poppy last year. He doesn't like the British but is happy enough taking our money.
Lest we forget, "The enemy Within" Thatcher's slurr on British Miners, who many ,like my dad lost their dads & other relatives in wars and conflicts around the world. My dads dad was a Miner who chose to fight for his country when he could've stayed at home working in the pit. I'm my eyes how can we criticise James McLean when our own Political leader comes out with a statement like that. The outcome of the Falklands conflict was very significant in giving Thatcher the massive majority she had at the following General election. There were Miners relatives and people from mining communities in that conflict. I really could go on for an age about this but I've already made A longer post than I had intended to. Just to say, I wear A poppy out of respect for all victims of war and conflict. I wear a poppy and show respect as a personal choice and not because I am made to feel I have to.
Re: Lest we forget, "The enemy Within" mclean is a ira sympathizer.........along with neil lennon and paddy mccourt.......they don,t hide the benefit nights they support.........thats the real reason he does,nt wear a poppy..........
Re: Lest we forget, "The enemy Within" Celtics fans boo through the minutes silence and shame themselves again. the only club in Britain to not wear poppies on their tops........match made in heaven mclean and those scumbags..............
Re: Lest we forget, "The enemy Within" Will never forget what those feckin Unionist MPs did when they voted with the Tory Govt to finally push through the pit closure programme that devasted the Dearne Valley and other mining communities.
Sorry fella, but it's anything but disrespectful. He fully explains his reasons for not wearing a poppy and is at pains to indicate why he feels that way. That's a long way from not showing respect.
As much as I'm passionate about respecting everyone who fought for our country on remembrance day, I do respect other people's views that are respectful themselves, but have seen the bad sides of British Foreign policy & our actions in particular in Ireland & don't want to reflect those. I respect the bloke more for making his stance. Takes a bit of guts. You don't have to agree with him, but he is clearly not being disrespectful of the dead. (PS, sorry for over using the word R.E.S.P.E.C.T. , but that is what it is about!)
Re: Lest we forget, "The enemy Within" wake up mate, this is 2014... even Paisley & Adams made some sort of peace ... this is just a bloke who wants to show some respect in his own way... he has clearly shown that & said he mourns his relative who fought
