Re: Tasteless pap Real ale is for people who wear cardies and sandals, so they can say "Oh I only drink real ale".Most of it tastes like fecking homebrew.
Re: Tasteless pap From Wikipedia Cask ale or cask-conditioned beer is the term for unfiltered and unpasteurised beer which is conditioned (including secondary fermentation) and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure. Cask ale may also be referred to as real ale, a term coined by the Campaign for Real Ale, often now extended to cover bottle-conditioned beer as well. So no, John Smiths Smooth is not "real ale" because it has added nitrogen, not to mention all the other chemicals in it.

Got to say I like JSS, I drink that more than anything else. Real ale ugh, cask beer ( real ale ) is unfiltered and leaves the yeast sediment in the storage vessel to allow secondary fermentation, I have yet to taste one that is drinkable in any quantity. All John Smiths beers including their cask conditioned beer ( real ale ) are made to the same recipe and with the same ingredients, they only differ in the way they are finished ( filtered ) and the way they are stored and served, so for those who say JSS is made differently to cask beer are wrong.
