Rejecting bids for our players and signing players on 4 year deals, this is a different (but good) window for us.
Also add to that selling fringe players for a profit and keeping a financial interest in their futures. We are definitely progressing as a club.
That is a very good point. If it stays like this, it’s definitely been one of our better transfer windows for a while.
The sell ons have been the best bit recently. When we let Kayden Jackson go for a nominal fee the usual suspects happily crawled out and started slating the player and calling him useless, and slagging the club for taking a chance on a non league talent, despite having never seen him play a competitive game, let alone a run of games. But the sell on fee, after he’s contributed to 31 goals in a season for Stanley, will net the club nearly £800k. I’m beginning to think we should trust the recruitment team a bit more! Not every transfer will work out here, but if we retain the interest the likes of Mallan and Knasmullner May just bring us a little helpful windfall next season. Keep it up Barnsley!
This is very good to see get past tomorrow without any outgoing transfers + 2/3 loans before the end of the month we've had a pretty good window.
I’m not sure we’ll see any loans. Perhaps 1 if it’s too good to not take. If we are basing it on the Brentford/Moneyball method then developing others talent is not in the plan. Read somewhere that Brentford haven’t loaned a player for something like 6 years (could be ******** I’ve not checked) as they would rather raise the value of their own players. Edit; it is ********. They loaned 2 players in 2015! But seems like they try not to ‘rely’ on it like other clubs do. It’s all about balance I suppose. Edit Edit: one of those players was Callum Elder. Clearly their spreadsheet got a virus that year....
I think another subtle but hopefully key difference this window so far is that we seem to be signing players that fit the coach's needs and style of play. We have a glaring hole at the base of the midfield, we sign Dougall - tick. The coach wants to play an energetic fast-moving tempo, we sign young, athletic, energetic players Styles and Williams - tick. (As opposed to this time last season when we needed a big dominating striker and got Ike Ugbo and we needed a defensive midfielder or two and got no end of number 10s). A fourth striker and winger in the same mould and I'd be close to giving this window top marks.
Agree in terms of strengthening the squad a top keeper would probably improve us, although if Davies find his best form he is a top keeper in this league. Eastwood however has just set a goalkeeper academy up in Oxford so don’t think he will be moving. Although if Davies had let in 4, including those two long range strikes, and if he’s passed to ball to Ken Dougall then he would be getting absolutely slaughtered on here!! Funny old game.
Not really sure on him tbh. Yes, he pulled a few good saves off to keep the score down but he also had a few hairy moments. I’m okay with Davies as number 1 and Walton as backup. If Davies gets his form back from when we were in league 1 last time then we’ll be fine and if not, January we can assess the situation again.
I'd go so far as to say that if we could get Eastwood it would be a keeper signing to (almost) rank with that of Heinz Muller. I was very impressed with the way he dominated his area on Saturday and he pulled off a few cracking saves as well. Would love to have him, at the right price.
To be fair Thiam’s first went like a rocket, perhaps a bit suspect for the second, and apart from the the poor kick out to Dougall, I didn’t notice other mistakes. His command of his area was impressive.
The second one was stoppable in my opinion, although it was beautifully struck. My point is not that Eastwood is a suspect goalie, as all reports on his performances over the last couple of years suggest that he clearly isn't. More than Davies would have been absolutely slated on here for the same errors, quite possibly by a lot of the same people who were upset that we didn't sign Eastwood in January.
