To be honest….looking at the list of teams in L1 I would think the only ones we have a better budget than would be Wimbledon, Burton, Exeter, Northampton, Port Vale and Stevenage. A couple of those might be a stretch if I’m honest. Seeing some of the signings being made by other clubs hammers home the mess we’re in. Sadly I think we’ll be at this level for a long time (if we don’t drop further).
That's just typical. No way should orient, rovrum, Wycombe should have a better budget than us. It's seriously bad business from them above. I don't care if anyone's not queuing to buy us but they should be hounded out!
A few points.... 1. It's still preseason so theoretically no need to panic or despair. 2. Any failure to get 1 player through the door is not failure in the big scheme (see point 1) 3. The club has indeed brought a lot of crap in and have therefore been wasting money on crap. So, if the club can offload said crap players and learn not to do it again that's good. This could take a couple of years though. 4. The board and recruitment have been woeful (see point 3) but if they're being more prudent now then it will entail cutting costs and reducing the overall wage bill ( hence I suspect was the reason behind Humphreys' bogging off) 5. Recruitment needs to be more savvy, less scattergun and directed by the coach who should be in post for as long as it takes to get the squad size down. Hourihane should stay in post unless the next season is catastrophic. 6. If some clubs are getting one or two decent L1 players in its irrelevant to us. There are still players out there and its still preseason (see point 1). 7. If recruitment is bad we'll be able to see by Sept/Oct. In that case, sack Mladen not Hourihane (see point 5). 8. If potential signings want to play for other clubs they can bollux. 9. If the club gets relegated to L2 it will be crap management, unwillingness to spend more money, crap recruitment by Sormaz, bloated squad, cheap wages cos of bloated squad, crap coaching based on inexperience and/or a combination of any of the above. If Barnsley get promoted it will be the reverse of a lot of those and a miracle.
Teams will always go up and down in their standing. In the 60's Rotherham were always higher than us. Unlike some I do not see our owners as weak. The weak ones are the ones that run up major losses every year which they personally stand. That is no way to run a business. Many owners in the Championship subsidize their clubs to the tune of £20 mill each year and what happens when they get fed up. It is unsustainable.
Why? Wycombe have got a Bilionaire Khazak owner. Think they chucked a large ammount of money about last transfer window
I get what you’re saying but when we’re struggling to compete financially with a vast majority of L1 clubs we’re only heading in one direction to get out of the league. And it’s not up. You wouldn’t think modern football is sustainable but spending at all levels just keeps going up and shows no sign of slowing down. We made a big statement about targeting free agents but that all boils down to one thing usually. The club offering the highest wages gets the player. It’s telling that we’re just over 3 weeks from KO and despite that statement we’re yet to sign a single free agent player. Says it all….
And who funds the club if they walk away? Have you looked at the clubs accounts? That's a serious question I'm not trying to be ars*y. If you want us to have money to spend on transfers then the reality is we have a current turnover of 9m, we'd need to half our current wage bill to be close to being sustainable, the reality of that means a bottom 6 wage bill, can't have it both ways.
Yep. When it comes to wages it's always us. It's always our fans that use "losses" as an excuse. We talk about sustainability, we ain't asking for us to keep breaking the bank. We are just wanting us to sign players that we should be going in for. Not losing out to teams smaller than us. It's funny how the club have been called out for not been ambitious by ex players. No other club has this problem it seems. Eventually these very cheap options will backfire and we will find ourselves at the bottom of the panel with as much money as we would if we showed a bit of ambition.
Wy do no other club similar or our size supporters have this opinion? I don't know how we are making so many losses unless we spend more than we are lead to believe on these overseas players
Great Post, I'm not singling anyone out but some of our fanbase need a serious reality check of the state of the game and our position with that. There's fans taking irrational stand points banging their knives and folks on the table like children because we haven't signed xyz player and compromised a difficult financial position. Then it's the usual drivel about the owners pocketing cash, fiddling the books etc etc. Without wanting to be rude I'm absolutely no expert but understand the basics, there's a massive lack of financial knowledge amongst our fans who can't be bothered to find out because they don't understand the numbers or just choose not to because they are in denial.
Which other club smaller than us then had an 10m wage bill in the last set of accounts ? In 2023/2024 season for every £1 that came into the club we spent £1.25 on wages that's before other running costs, where do you think the money for more fees is coming from, we've started this season with 20 odd players under contract 20 odd players !!!! What are you expecting seriously?
it’s not just us fans that don’t have the knowledge of football finances it’s also the board, lack of player knowledge is a key point. That’s probably why we can’t shift half of the players we need to because the players are laughing with how much we are paying them. 9 million a season loss is ultimately down to the board, us fans haven’t put the club under so much financial pressure. It pure and simple mismanagement/neglect.
I'm not doubting that, and I'm still very much of the belief that Mladen Sormaz isn't a Sporting Director and never will be, I don't want to name drop the people I know associated with the club but he isn't upto the job, our recruitment has been poor in large and I'm pleased that Conor is now more hands on with that side, but the top and bottom of it is we only have what we have budget wise, if player xyz is out of our price range then so be it, we move on. We have to cut the cost base this season unfortunately that's the reality, unless someone wants to take some deadwood off us then we are stuck with them until next summer. Next season is very much about getting more game time into the young players, trying to build a proper playing identity and staying away from trouble, I'd take mid table quite happily, Conor needs time and lots of backing and hopefully this time next year we will be in a healthier state.
If they’re delaying any announcement for dramatic impact, I feel like it’s being missed now. Hopefully he signs for us or someone to put this to bed soon.
