my wife says that theres more gun related crime due to violent computer games, i dont think so personally.

i play call of duty and the like.It doesnt make me want to buy several weapons and go around blasting people.

i think the main problem here is the types of weapon that can be bought quite easily.

You've hit the nail on the head. I've been to Walmart in the States (Montana), and I could buy a gun along with my bread and milk. And the NRA doesn't see a problem with that.

here in maryland walmart doesnt sell guns its illegal.

thats the problem with the NRA because its members are mostly hunters there blinkered i believe.

if it was air rifles for sale there wouldnt be as much of a problem but the weapon of choice that is also the most owned gun in the us is a semi automatic AR 15 A civilian version of the M-16 assault rifle.
    there lies the problem

Before computer games it was violent films - I've never played Gta and thought about nicking a car and gunning down police officers

Uk gun crime is reportedly 1.7% per populace that of America. Canada is 17%, an enormous recent increase due to illegally imported US guns.

There was a shooting in Canada night before last(?). Some guy was shot in the head, and then got his missus to drive him to the hospital!

Gun crime is very low here though (I'm glad to say). But there is an incredibly large number of people that go hunting here - for Elk mainly, but also black bears. Makes my blood boil when people (some of them I count as friends) tell me they are going hunting for a week. The native people in the North West Territories and Iqaluit need to hunt to survive. No-one else does. Fortunately gun control is much tighter here than in the U.S. - you can't just buy one at Walmart.

If firearms were as readily available in the UK as in the US there'd be mayhem here too, fortunately we have some of the strictest firearms laws in the world and the vast bulk of crimes involve illegal firearms.

hit the nail on the head there redstar AR15's are not a hunting rifle at all, strangely though I was talking to a guy from Pennsylvania,he and his kids had an AK47 they used to go down to the range with......he also played in a darts league at home, they were only allowed to use darts with plastic points in the boozer as they are not allowed with steel tips in a public place!!!.................very strange.

I find it more staggering the more I listen to these.

It's akin to self regulation in banking and we know what happened their.

If people want the right to defend, then grow a pair and learn how to use karate or simply how to land one on somebody's face properly, at the same time get rid of all these guns.

The thing is nobody (or almost nobody) is even suggesting a complete ban on guns, and I'm realistic to know that wouldn't work. What is being proposed are greater controls, more background checks, and a ban on certain weapons.

The NRA are posturing, but from what I've read and seen on various US sites, I do think there appears to be a general feeling that something must be done and the weight of public opinion is with that.

If you think that gun crime in the UK is worse than in the US you are completely bonkers. I know you have just moved there but I have family that have lived there for years and years. There are guns all over, in peoples houses, in pubs, in schools. At one point in the last few years - more than 50% of the households in the entire nation held guns.

8500 people were murdered in 2011 using guns in the US against less than 40 in the UK.

I do agree however that this country is trying to play catch up tp the US but to compare is quite frankly rediculous.

you are correct about the general consensus of people but the NRA have been known to give backhanders to politicians in the past to stop the vote going through.

i also think that if this shooting in the USA hadnt involved children then we or anyone else wouldnt be having this discussion.

one thing i have found out and it seems strange to me that 26 people lost there lives, this does not include the gun mans mother whom he shot first.
dont know why shes not allowed in the statistics but there you go. so the actual is 28 dead and not 26
