Rotherham town centre is worse than Barnsley, but only just, and I'd say that's because it's just a stone's throw from Meadowhall. Am I right in thinking they're extending the tram to Rotherham? When that happens they might as well get rid of the town centre completely.
It's over rated how 'rough' Barnsley is. Don't get me wrong there's plenty of scruff's around town but through work I get to go all over the north of England & it's made me realise Barnsley isn't anywhere near as bad as I used to think it was when I was in education.
I love Barnsley and am proud to come from here. Even if I were ever to move, I certainly wouldn't bad mouth my home town, nor the people from it's community. Perhaps I'm not clever enough nor educated enough to have realised how much better the life is away from the town. Still, at least a thicko like me can be educated by brighter, better people who've seen the light.
What a ludicrous thing to say when you appear to support my home town's football team. Why knock the place? I know loads of people from elsewhere who have chosen to live in Barnsley, including my previous and current wife, current and ex work colleagues, friends and acquaintances, and further friends of all those people. Probably in the hundreds, and that's just me. It's a great part of the world to live in and, having tried to leave once and came back, I would never leave again.
Barnsley is good compared to a lot Friendly people who know and police what is fair Far different and upbeat place when footy club is doing well Puts a smile on peoples faces Sounds daft but it may be better for the town that we got relegated and hopefully win s few in div one and liven town up a little
Same here mate, seen a lot of places similar in size to Barnsley which seemed to have far less life when going to away games, particularly back when we were in League One - literally asking people where the centre of town was whilst being stood in it. A lot of places around Birmingham have no identity of their own as well, merely a locality where people live with no real town centre to speak of apart from maybe a row of shops and a few pubs similar to Wombwell. This still doesn't disguise the fact that Barnsley Council have made some massive errors in the town centre - a big one being announcing that the whole metropolitan centre would be demolished only to recently admit that this will not be the case which meant most of the units have been left empty with none of the larger stores willing to take on a short-term lease.
Barnsley's economy was booming in the seventies pre Thatcher .don't consider Bliars tenure as labour rule tbh we've had thirty odd years of authority not giving a fek but Barnsley have more chance of the labour party giving a fek than we ever will the tories
Barnsley was a lovely place in the 70s and early 80s, clean vibrant and a good shopping town, but due to many reasons its none of those now it's dirty and full of cheap shops. It is a far worse place now than it ever was. Shame but unfortunately it's not a place I would choose to live.
Your right, I was talking about the centre of town really, many of the areas to the West of the town are nice.
Why don't you go and sit in a blue stand on Saturday and sing songs about Barnsley being full of scrubbers, knobhead.
I agree with you about the town centre, but the town has loads of other places to offer. The town centre is a vicious circle and needs MASSIVE (if I may use that word) investment to attract people back. The worse it gets, the fewer people go, and the worse it gets. I get over sensitive when people slag Barnsley off as, after over 30 years in business designing, manufacturing and marketing electronic products made in Barnsley world wide, I've heard it all and I'm fed up of it. Apologies if I'm taking it out on you. I simply believe that financial quality of life is very good here, because of lower accommodation costs. That's why several of my mates and neighbours around here are originally from London and the South East who've had enough of that and decided to move up here for a better life.
Stahl At times people from barnsley who are on their tavels are too defensive about the town Once you point out all the positives rather than defend the negatives people are impressed
