The name Manchester United stands for a lot more than Manchester City

I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but United's home-grown talent really came in to their own around the mid 90's, which means they must have joined the United setup around 1990, not a year that Manchester United won the league.

Maybe Man City will win a host of trophies, be in a position to poach some of Europes finest youngsters, and win even more trophies. However, they'll never eclipse what United achieved, as the Nevilles, Beckhams and Scholes' of this World didn't join United on the back of a 500 million pounds investment or eight championship titles in ten years, they joined because of Alex Ferguson and the systems he was implementing. Will Mark Hughes ever do the same? No, neither will any other Man City manager in the next twenty years.

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

    The only comparison is Chelsea.

People have always wanted to play for Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool, and they as clubs tend to have a long-standing culture of bringing in young players - a lot of the time complete unknowns - giving them time to develop and over time making them household names. Ok, there have been big name signings, but they don't make a habit of it.

Chelsea, and now Man City, bring in the already household names and offer them obscene amounts of money, as otherwise the players would probably not even have considered them. That's the big difference.

    it's not 50/50 at all.

they paid a lot of money for Pallister - most expensive defender at the time i think. Broke the record for Keane.
Only 3 could be said to be home grown - Giggs, Hughes and Sharpe. I think Giggs was knicked from another youth set-up. Ironically wasnt it Man City?
