I’ve nothing but decent memories of Kane. Worked hard and did ok for us - never had game time to show much else.

This is really sad, and I genuinely feel for the lad.
Social media can be devastating if you're young or not strong...lads like Kane are doing their best...years ago arseholes in the crowd could shout abuse and generally it could be lost in the crowd noise or ignored.
Those arseholes in the crowd think it's OK to abuse young sportsmen because they think they're not good enough...fair enough, thats an opinion...oblivious to the fact that they, the abuser's couldn't get in to the lowliest pub team, never mind get a chance to live the dream of playing in the football league. But to be honest there is something darker in these people...none of us should be abusing other people, particularly youngsters....at my age I wouldn't give a ****, at 30 I'd probably have asked them to repeat it in person in the car park...but at 19 or 20 I might have been hurt...and my loved ones might have been hurt.
    FFS just stop.

That's the strange thing, the hatred. Fair enough a player might be having a bad game, a bad month or even a bad season. But they signed for the club, got selected by the manager and tried their best on the pitch. What part of that is loathsome?

At best it affects their confidence and their future performances. At worst it affects their lives.

There's a good chance at the moment with no crowds that it will affect them more as they aren't getting the immediate cheering and support. Thank goodness we're currently doing well and nobody is an easy target.

I thought he was decent and would have done well at League 1 level if given a chance.

Plenty of folk shout it at them on match days. Same goes for any public performer, people heckle actors and comedians etc at live shows. As I said, as long as it only relates to how well they play and not race or gender etc then I'd say it's part of the job. After all, if I was a crap software developer, the people who paid my wages would have a word about it and maybe use my annual appraisal to address my shortcomings, slightly more formalised I agree but much the same in principal. I seem to remember people at Oakwell chanting "Iley Out" some years ago....

Very rarely, if ever, do you get the best out of people by criticising them in front of others. Praise in public, criticise in private. I’m sure Kane knew when he’d not played well without someone who has never played football telling him he’s useless. If you have a child or employee who failed at something would you yell at them in public and say they were worthless? Would that help next time they found themselves in a similar situation?
The same goes for the squad today. They’re all young and doing the best job they can, trying to improve and giving their all. If you want the team to succeed you should encourage them when they do their best and let the manager take care of the rest. Support them in other words. Football is a confidence game so why people think it helps to make negative or personal comments about our players is beyond me.

And the same applies, how many do you reckon would say it to them if it was just the two of them in a room? They wouldn't, not because they think they're going to get a kicking, but because it just isn't appropriate. People seem to think it is acceptable to do it from a distance - whether its from a crowd or online- and it isn't.

Telling me I'm crap at my job isn't going to make me any better at my job, either. I'm sure 99% are fully aware that they haven't had a good game.

Fair points mate, I don't really disagree with you, there's far too much trolling and hate flying round the internet.
