So I'm confused. This law makes them legally responsible for platform content.. making them ban more people.. further subduing free speech?

Hopkins suggested Nazi solutions to immigration. I'm ok with supporters of genocide being deplatformed to be honest. I don't fear any slippery slopes relating to it. At all.

I don't understand how Governments taking control of social media would be any better either.

Social media companies rely on having the biggest audience possible. If they're viewed as being left or right leaning they are boycotted by supporters of the opposite side and stand to lose out. So they only deplatform the most extreme and only after several warnings.

Governments are always skewed either left or right, so it would be beneficial to a particular government to bias social media companies against their political opponents.

I'm not saying the system is perfect but it could be a lot worse if power over social media is given to governments.

So presumably you’re in favour of ISIS freely promoting their agenda and showing beheading videos on social media then.

I think you'll find it is illegal as it constitutes a hate crime under the Criminal Justice Act 1998. My understanding is that disappointingly the CPS rarely prosecute, but it is illegal.

I've given you the wrong law, like a spanner. It's the Malicious Communication Act 1988 and the Communications Act 2003, which can then be racially aggravated and made worse under section 145 of the Criminal Justice Act 2003.

    Sorry.

Yeah. Imagine being that politically incorrect that you're banned from Twitter, which is a an absolute cesspool.

Which governments would get to take control of social media though. You could have a situation where posts supporting one country (Eastasia) are banned in the neighbouring country (Eurasia) and vice versa. Who gets to judge which posts are allowed on Twitter, which is based in Airstrip One and has no infrastructure, offices or employees in either Eastasia or Eurasia? Even if you installed a Great Firewall to block access, all the kids would be on VPNs are posting their stuff within a few hours....

Would that be the same ISIS we funded via our foreign aid budget ? Of course you don't need me to tell you that it all came under the timber sycamore umbrella below .

This is why I'm against censorship in all forms . Just think if the government could cover this up off the back of a few nasties online they would .

There was a load of noise on social media about 10 years ago about the lefts intolerance of intolerance making them just as bad as racists*. I think it was distilled on this site last year to left wing fascists or similar ;)

Oh I remember back in the day when Afghanistan was under Russian occupation and Mrs T was making speeches about the wonderful Mujahadeen.

but of course that’s the rabbit hole you wanted me down. ;)

Are you happy for ISIS to be free to peddle their hatred in our school playgrounds, tv screens and social media channels. Simple question.

It’s not easy to prove intent, which is probably why the charges against Joey Barton were reduced

Slippery slopes to genocide? Hitler shouldn’t have been halted at Nuremberg? He was just free speaking? Aye, that was an imperfect system, alreight. Like social media didn’t exist before the internet?
