I’m sure at half time in the famous 7-1 Huddersfield game, 6-0 up. Kelvin was in the Ponty End bogs ranting that “****ing McClare is ****ing ****, should’ve ****ing had a ****ing b*****d hat trick and we should be ****ing 10 b*****d up” Also remember him on away trips with Hoyland / Mount Reds reading out loud the ‘personal’ ads from the Daily Sport in that booming voice of his. “Call me to slide your length in my love tunnel” etc. Kept us entertained for many a mile Top bloke
I know Kelvin by sight, usually guaranteed to be spotted at away games at some point. I've spoken to him briefly on a few occasions and, despite never missing a game, he never seems happy to be there and usually has something to complain about. That's what a lifetime of following the Reds does to you, I guess I recall having a long chat with Ashley in the pub before we played Leyton Orient at the start of LJ's tenure. Nice fella. I think it was the game where we'd have won 6 in a row, but ended up drawing 0-0, and then subsequently discovered that LJ also did epic losing streaks too. Totally get your point about it being a travesty if he'd not managed to get a ticket, so am glad that he did get one. However, I know some other long-standing, pretty much guaranteed to be at every game, supporters who weren't so lucky, and its just a shame that everyone who 'deserved' to be there couldn't be accommodated, thanks to the government restrictions.
Sounds like just the man we need to get Andersen back to pre-March 2020 levels. Perfect for the play-offs.
A bit of Kelv's background... I don't think he would mind.. As a kid he lived at the bottom of Edmunds Rd, Worsbro Dale, in a railway house near the Boatman's Rest. The line was used then and his dad worked for the railways. They were near the next signal box east of glasshouse crossing. His dad was a channel islander who (I assume) came over during the war... hence the french sounding surname. The three boys are white crossers and Kelv was a very good schoolboy goalkeeper. He was always obsessed with BFC, him and his good mates, Jack, Paz, John and others. I bump into him most times that I'm back and I always hear him first.
I can remember going to their house a few times with a friend when I was 11/12 and seeing Kelv's programme collection, they were all the really small one's that we used to have. Even in those days it seemed like he had thousands of them.
Generally, you do only hear him when we have played rubbish and lost, and there is no doubt he would have made a powerful rock band singer if he had the desire - he wouldn't have needed the Marshall amps.
We had words with him and his group in the middle of the Ponty at the Liverpool FA Cup game in 1984. He called us "fookin' part-timers" which riled, as we never missed a game home or away in those days. How we knew he was a regular, but he didn't recognise us likewise was a mystery, especially as the away support had dwindled to a relatively small hard core at most games by that time. Then again...
Known Kelvin n Ashley nye on 40yrs. God help the opposing coaches at the reserve games. lol. Kel would tell em how crap they were as players and coaches. . Folk in Lundwood could hear him. So many stories. ( the king of belching the loudest on cue. ) He travels to distant games with us. (Hoyland reds) along with Eric when he (Eric) doesn’t fancy the drive. I have never known any Person panic as much if it appears we may not get to the ground at least an hr before. The number of grounds he has been to. is unbelievable. British pro and non league. Must be in the high hundreds. Him and Ash were in the town hall. invited to the premiership promotion party. Ashley stepped back a bit when he retired. Choosing his games. On the Day Ashley reached the 92. It was kelvins 2nd time. On (I’ll stand corrected) that day. They attended 3 games. Southampton v Spurs/Chelsea v Barnsley/Barnet v ? As the saying goes. (It probably defines him, more than anyone else) A piece of rock. Cut him down the middle it would say Barnsley FC. If I’d heard Kel hadn’t got a ticket. I genuinely would have offered him mine. Nobody is more deserving. As an aside. I have every programme from 1979. Home and away. To mid 2000s . I relied on Ashley to get all my away programmes. Knowing full well they wouldn't have been sold out before he got there or i didn't go. Bless em both. Re the programme when Ash achieved the 92. He ( if not both on em) had a little article in it mentioning the achievement/s.
When we played Southampton away in the FA Cup in1985 there was an article about Kelvin and Ashley in the match day programme completing the "92". As an aside I remember one reserve game Michael Spinks came down from the directors box to ask him to curb his language. Although time can effect the memory I think at the time his reply was in a belching kind of way beginning with B and ending in lox,and if he didn't say it he will have certainly been thinking it.Top lads Kelvin and Ash.
