It’s a very emotive issue, and JC hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory on this issue. And it’s at that point that my frustration with JC kicks in, he’s a fu cking awful ‘politician’. There’s a time to stick to your principles, and a time to keep your gob shut. I’m happy to join the throng of lefties defending JC having ‘meetings with terrorists’ in the spirit of ‘it’s only right that we gather the views of people no matter how abhorrent their actions’. But then Mr Corbyn refuses to sit down and have a meeting with the Prime Minister of this country, and leaves us all hanging out to dry. IMHO There are many reasons to support JC, but almost as many reasons to want him to just shut up as well.
Are the Tories still forcing through those terrible boundary changes? That IMO would make it even harder for any other party to oust them, really dilutes the Labour vote. Seems to have gone quiet though on that issue.
It got announced around a month or so ago. But yes, I think its 2024 they are due to come in, though their is some form of rolling consultation so the boundaries might slightly alter (some issues were flagged that some boundaries would straddle county borders). I've seen varying independent analysis suggesting it could have given the tories as many as 10 extra seats at the last GE. They are also changing the Mayoral voting system to FPTP in the hope they can get some additional tory mayors. The longer Labour take to unite, the harder it will be to win power when they finally do.
I'd agree with that as well. Strikes me as a very sincere 'nice' bloke but a very stubborn, grumpy tactically unaware bloke as well. I've always thought the left need a socialist version of Blair. Very media savvy, dressed well, nice teeth etc etc....
Some still don’t get it. A centrist Labour Party can’t be elected without the support of the left just like the left can’t be elected without the centrists. There’s no Scottish vote anymore & there’s no substantial Lib Dem vote to take seats from the Tories. Whatever people think of Corbyn he at least realised this & had centrists on his front bench. Starmer seems to be deluded & thinks he can win without the left. Starmer isn’t making the party more electable he’s making it more of a laughing stock. Your average voter has no idea who these groups are that are been proscribed, all they see is more infighting. The people who make racist comments should be suspended individually. Suspending whole groups is idiotic especially when the majority will have done nothing wrong. These people have friends, families, partners. Just throwing votes away. I honestly think people in general & on here over estimate the average voter. Not many people care whether Labour is to the left or in the centre. They just want to see a competent party. Starmer needs to follow the pledges he got elected on & start acting like a leader. Constantly picking fights & showing double standards on disciplinary matters will only cost him votes rather than attract new voters. We’re seeing in the local elections & in the by elections that the people deserting Labour aren’t going to the Tories or the Lib Dem’s they’re just not voting or voting Green so logic suggests these are people on the left as you would expect centrists to go Lib Dem or even Tory. I don’t think you can take these people for granted. I can’t see them coming back to the party. Certainly not under Starmer anyway.
Spot on , the Party has gone from being the richest political party in the country to virtual bankruptcy under Starmer as members leave in droves , Kinnock tried the Starmer strategy of trying to rid Labour of left wing activists , it didn’t work for him , John Smith although right of centre at the time ( he’d probably be booted out like Ken Loach now ) new he had to work with the left , a pragmatist , a reformer that the left could follow . Starmer needs to stop this obsession with reducing the Party to a right wing hybrid and start following through with his leadership promises
Conveniently forgets to mention the 55000 members lost in the first two months of Starmers leadership , right wing anti Corbyn twaddle . 90 redundancies in head office some rehired on temp contracts ,fire and rehire , hypocrites .Starmers ignoring the finances of the Party hoping to call some hedge fund favours in at election time , like the Torys do
I think you're right, that the average voter is over estimated. As such, they won't have a clue about what is going on at party administration level. I doubt they will know what pledges Starmer made to try to become leader. I couldn't tell you. I don't really care at this time. Particularly with a government who will do anything to win. The bandwidth of what is going on has been largely narrowed to covid and whatever the media want to pick up, or are instructed to pick up about the government agenda. Covid has made any oppositions job much harder (local elections showed that in Scotland and Wales too). Corbyn was given 2 elections to fail. Let's give Starmer at least half of that grace period.
They won’t have a clue about each individual pledge but the pledges included unifying the party which is what does matter. Infighting is a massive turn off for the average voter. Even though I completely agree with Dianne Abbott’s tweet this morning & understand why she doesn’t like Starmer I don’t think she should’ve posted it because it just adds fuel to the fire. Don’t lower yourself to the same standards as Neil Coyle, Jess Phillips, Margaret Hodge & co., the party needs to be united. I think Starmer will get an election as I don’t think there’s an obvious candidate to replace him. The only one that stands out is Burnham who’s obviously not an MP currently. It just feels to me like he’s getting everything wrong. I don’t go along with the ‘Tory plant’ stuff some people on the left come out with but I can certainly see why they think it.
