I actually think Jamie Carragher is a fantastic analyst and commentator when he's involving in anything else apart from Liverpool.
I watch most sports coverage with the sound off. That's more out of superstition than anything else. The commentators curse strikes quite regularly in most sports. Mike Cattermole will say a horse is "poised ready to ready to strike". If he says that and you've backed it. It will be about to flounder and find absolutely nothing off the bridle. In football Sam Shutteryourface will reel of successful penalty stats just as a player is about to take a penalty and they'll miss. Back on thread. I don't really care who commentates as long as they do it properly and it stays relevant.
When I watch football, I quite like to watch the tv pictures with the sound off and listen to the radio commentary. On the radio there is nowhere to hide and they're generally better at describing it than the tv ones.
For what it's worth @fired whenever I hear or read comments like those attributed to Keegan, my only thought is how out of touch the person repeating such views is. Pretty similar to what I used to think about people who aired racially descriminatory or homophobic views. I don't think that anymore because I pretty much never hear such views anymore. And it won't be long before this kind of stuff goes the same way. We're in a transitional period but the battle has already been won.
I like Sue Smith on Soccer Setdy, but Emma Hayes, although knowledgeable, is an absolute bore to listen to.
Cheers . It’s just when you see / hear people saying he’s right….. thousands of them on Facebook/ Twitter and you just see what we are up against. It’s depressing.
Agree about Jenas he is awful, I would also add never seen Jill Scott do anything bad either and would quite happily listen to more of her
Although certain right wing politicians are using the current battle against trans people as a footstep to roll back the progress to the other LGBTQ+ - including the LGB Alliance - especially in America and the Tory party. It might get worse before it gets better again.
I’d listen to any of the names mentioned, male or female, in preference to Sam Matterface. He’s absolutely woeful and what itv were thinking when they promoted him to the top commentator role I’ve no idea
Don't know about UK but in Ireland I'd say the situation is the same. There's a positive discrimination agenda to equalise the number of female and male commentators/analysts. I'm happy enough with that until things are in balance. Given the smaller pool of female ex players to draw from there are few really good options. However, there are some good female commentators now starting to appear. It was noticeable in the coverage of the Womens World Cup. Give it a bit of time and everything will sort itself out. There's absolutely no reason why a woman can't commentate/analyse as well as a man. Or be as annoying as a man. John Motson drove me mad for decades with his screeching and little sniggers at his own pathetic puns and little jokes. Awful.
Most pundits a dreadful, male or female. I can only name a handful of decent pundits who are interesting to listen to. I’d rather listen to fans take on things to be honest. Anyway Ally Mcoist is the best hands down.
