Fair enough mate. I just think the no-shirt-on-father's-day 'crisis' has been exaggerated beyond belief. And it keeps coming up. Personally I usually wait until the sale in March. Last year i got the green one when it came out - maybe that's a bad omen
It all comes back to how easy it is to use. If you had to write a letter to the club saying please can you announce the new kit, pay for a stamp, walk to the letter box and then wait 2 working days for it to even arrive at the club, people would find something much more interesting to do with their time. As it stands you can comment on every BFC tweet with “announce x” and then feel disgruntled your throwaway remark isn’t valued.
In that scenario I would wait. Anyone who is willing to buy a ridiculously over priced shirt will probably still buy it a few weeks later. Yes that includes myself I've bought plenty of them over the years.
I remember a time when a band would bring an album out (I regularly read the NME), and the interviewer would always get the question in: 'have you started work on the next one?' or words to that effect. I used to think hang on, they've literally just released this one and you want to talk about the potential next one that they're not even thinking about yet. I think it was part-lazy journalism, part-everything now culture. But it's got worse.
Actually they do miss out on Father's day sales. I personally wouldn't buy a shirt but my son has bought me one for Father's day on the odd occasion that the new kits been available. ( Been a few years now). He'd love to buy me one every year for Father's day. Makes it easy for him. Instead he racks his brain for ideas and buys me an alternative gift. I've told him not to bother because I don't need anything. My mates are in the same position, they'd wear a shirt if their kids bought them one. It's a bit like flowers for Mother's Day. If none were available they'd get an alternative gift.
I'm more annoyed at the thought of the lack of sponsorship than the kit not being released yet. If they are to change then maybe they will wait until the 1st July when I'd imagine the contract runs out on the current one.
We've actually been in this situation previously, during the 1994/95 season. We originally announced a sponsorship deal with FPW, which turned out to be some kind of pyramid scheme so was quickly shelved. A very small number of shirts were printed with their name on (of which Ian Davies, our then marketing manager, said he had one of them). The team started the season playing without a shirt sponsor. Eventually, we agreed a new deal with a relatively unknown sponsor called Ora, and so commenced the relationship with the sponsor who's name appeared on our shirts throughout the most successful period in our history. If I recall correctly, the shirts didn't go on sale until the new sponsorship deal was in place, so fans only ever had the option to buy them with the Ora name on them, as far as I'm aware.
Yeah we've had it out for Father's Day a few times over the years, but not recently. I remember one year the home shirt came out on the Monday so I picked one up before a trip to the east coast. In the same afternoon I am walking down the right side of Newborough in Scarborough and got a YOU REDS shouted at me by someone walking up the left side On the east coast last week the newest Barnsley shirt I saw was a lad in a big group with a couple of young kids in the pub who was wearing our Inter Milan away shirt from our Ora days.
I know it's a bit of a cold gift but could he not buy a gift card from the club shop and you could use it to buy the shirt when it comes out?
I'm only 35 JamDrop No, I think it's deeper than that. It's a reliance on information at your fingertips. I can only speak for myself but when i've researched something through a book or journal etc the information has tended to stick more because it's not just a quick one line from google, it's deeper reading and information.
My wife regularly asks what's for Tea tomorrow....straight after eating today's Tea....I kid you not!
I’m pretty sure quite a few would be sold with no sponsor on the front it would make the shirt have a little more longevity as sponsorships can date a kit instantly
What if we’re trying to get out of a deal we had to let JAQ’s brand sponsor it? Might be more lucrative…
Has it actually been put out that there is an issue with sponsorship or could it be just the global supply chain delays holding things up? My guess is the home shirt will be red if that helps. If my Nannan was still alive, she could have knitted 10,000 in a couple of weeks to solve the issue. Unbelievable teckers with those knitting wands.
We also had the 'Big Thing' shirt sponsor who went out of business but we kept their names on the shirt from memory.
