That's not my point My question is, what does abusing a player actually achieve? Whether you are entitled to abuse someone or not is another subject. If you do, what for?
From the security of a keyboard there are lots of brave warriors Today usually known as bullies... How brave with the abuse would they be up close and personal , not very I recon
Ah yes, good point mate. Not that I condone the stick that he got because the service he gave us was excellent, but I do think he'd definitely gone stale in his final few months at the club. I'd never have booed him though. For me Fallon had done nothing at all to deserve any stick.
The only players I would give "stick" to are players who are clearly "tossing it off" and not giving their all for the club. Anyone lie Kayode IMO doesn't deserve anything of the sort to be fair. As you say, he does look totally destroyed by a lot of what is said, and his confidence looks rock bottom. I don't think his confidence will improve whilst he is still here either. Certain players in the relegation team deserved stick - people like Lumsden who looked great while on loan, and then as soon as the transfer became permanent we started to see really lethargic performances.
Well the players that come through our system seem to be targeted much of the time. Andy Liddell got his fair share of stick as well. On the otherhand you've foreigners that do nothing with us like Hristov, Mostto etc who get stuck up for.
Bloody hell, how could I forget the man with the "football brain". Or was that "football for a brain". Talk about milking the club dry with his reported earnings at the time, and churning out such ***** on the pitch. Like I say mate, thats the only time I would ever see fit to turn against one of my own players.
The difference is You can't make a conscious decision to play better - you've either got it or you haven't. But you CAN try harder, run yourself into the ground, give 100% every game, not hide away etc etc etc, even if you are actually not a very good player. I would never abuse a player like that.
ROFL Sorry Sheron was much better than the people blinkered by rumours of his reputed earnings and transfer fee. Barnsley 28-01-1999 31-07-2003 £ 1500000 114 (38) 33 Not such a bad record, from midfield for a large part. Not a hard worker but decent enough on the whole. Hypocrisy rules.
He was a decent player, a good player even But towards the end he was tossing it off - OPINION! Well it's better than putting FACT
Same here mate. At the end of the day people like Kayode simply can't help not having the ability. If a league club offered me a contract i'd be over the moon (cos i'm **** at football) but I would always give my all. I would be a bit pissed off if the fans started getting on my back if I was giving my all. To put it bluntly I don't think Kayode is good enough, but I certainly wouldn't hound him out of the club whilever he gives his all.
Early on in his reds career I was waxing lyrical about him i'll be honest. But the abject performances in the closing months of his Oakwell career were also in my OPINION not good enough.
I'm glad you were brave enough to put that ... cos I was never a Sheron hater either. Remember his goal vs Blunts when he was on a bit of a roll, and everyone was talking him up ..... I'm not saying he was a workhorse, but I never bought into this business about how lazy he was.... maybe I just missed it, but I can think of alot worse, alot lazier players.
I agree with just about all you said I remember that goal from 85 yards against the blunts, and the header against the other dee dars. I'm talking about the relationship between his ability and his effort. Towards the end, it well well downhill. Remember Nardiello when he decided to put some effort in?
Didn't have much impact in his last few months granted though he had been largely displaced by the very poor Naylor or forced into midfield he had a run of abart 12 games towards the end of the season bart a goal having previously "amassing" 11 goals by the beginning of feb. ironically he grabbed the winner vs wimbledon in his last game, alas too late for it to matter.
RE: I agree with just about all you said All I remember is a player getting hassled continually by fans because he was getting paid too much - suppose it's chicken & egg. You get stick, your head goes down - you don't try?? Long time ago, but he just doesn't stand out as the laziest player I've seen in a Reds shirt - maybe I was too willing to see the positives at the time - the only players I can really say didn't put any effort in as far as I could see were Deon Burton, Kevin Donovan and John Oster In fact I'd give Oster the benefit of the doubt. I'm nice like that.
"You get stick, your head goes down" Exactly! That's my entire point. Some "fans" may have given Mike Sheron stick. I didn't. But towards the end he didn't put the effort in and appeared to be just waiting for his contract to run out so he could move on. Whether that was the cause of the stick, or the effect, who knows. I think he deserved some stick then, but I still didn't give him any while he was wearing a red shirt. In fact, I've NEVER given any Barnsley player stick (apart from Owen Archdeacon once, but that's another story).
