RE: Shame. I have no hang-ups. If I were offered a chance to get back into journalism, I should turn it down without a second thought. As I said above, how dare I offer an opinion based on evidence? Can't be having that, can we? God, no. He's the best. He'll be editing The Sun before he's 20.
RE: Exactly Spelling and capitalisation are neither here nor there - what do you think subs are for? Most of the hacks I know can't spell for **** - and furthermore, couldn't care less. If I were you, I would focus on the style and grammar... ;-)
Of course you do So you say, "check your spelling mate." What you don't do is rip him to pieces after his first attempt. Have you ever heard of encouragement? If this lad had read your 'critique' how do you think it would make him feel? We're talking about a school kid here who has taken time out of his life to write something. He's not out causing trouble; he's sat doing something creative. And then you give him a kicking like that. If, after he's finished school and completed his A-Level and taken his degree and got an apprenticeship at a paper, he submits an article with such errors to his editor then maybe he deserves such abuse. But until then he deserves support.
RE: Exactly "he'll never get anything OTHER than a harsh audience in journalism" I've received encouragement and praise for the most part.
RE: Shame. His piece was littered with errors. Tell me that it wasn't? - Incorrect use of question mark.</p> What would you like me to say: - Incorrect use of colon, should have used question mark.</p> </p> "Oh, wow, that's perfect! Go on, my son! Maintain that standard and you're a dead cert for a job?" - Incorrect placing of question mark.</p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> .</p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p> </p>
