No Helen, as we are not in the EU anymore. Also at border controls on mainland Europe, vehicles passed between countries if they were EU nationals, without being stopped. Even when the UK was still in the EU,because we are a island, it was difficult to have that frictionless crossing, like in land based countries.
I'm not sure what Mrs Patel is on about,no UK or EU citizen was allowed to enter the UK with just a ID card. I think the Conservative party conference, has shown a party and government that has run out of ideas already. Resorting to lies, misinformation and general arrogance, ie, " there is no alternative ".

Prior to Brexit EU nationals with qualified ID cards could use them to travel. Qualified ID documents are those which have reasonable security measures and are linked to Intel and security databases. These document counter measures had to be provided to other EU border agencies to ensure forgeries and counterfeits could be identified.
Each port had specialist forgery teams, not anymore. The training and retraining was continuous due to the nature of the threats.

Current policy..........answers on a post card or back of a cig packet.

Border Staff are currently overworked and basically keeping the show on the road by using their experience and common sense.
Communication is shocking and policy making is made off the cuff and you'll not be surprised to learn, not run by legal specialists.

To be fair, they aren't resorting to lies. They've lied from the start and just continued that to ever more ridiculous degrees.

I despair that there is still defence of this government from some quarters, irrespective of where the brexit lines were drawn. Thats done. We're now "sovereign"... whatever that means. Whats going on is the fault of the government thats been in power for 11 years. The government of the day should be judged on their actions and inactions.

They've failed. Whatever lies they muster should never be allowed to cloud that.

I thought the same until a night out in Bath, my Polish friend whips out his ID to get into a pub, only to be point blank refused by the bouncer. My friend explained that he was a UK resident and always used his Polish National ID to travel (no passport). The scumbag bouncer said it wasn't recognised over here so 'you're not coming in'. Funny how he travelled all round the EU/UK with it but got turned away from a sh1ty boozer in Bath. This was over 10 years ago, way before Breggers kicked in. I flew with him to Poland shortly after, out came the same ID to board the plane at Stansted: on we went.

I also read that a large percentage of European Lorry drivers travel on just their national ID card and many dont have passports up till now they bring goods into the UK on their ID cards - they will no longer be able to do this which is hardly going to improve the shortages we are now seeing. Also they wont be able to get visas to come and work here to add to the 27 that have already applied

We couldn't go there without a passport because we don't have Id cards. They COULD come here with an Id card. FACT.

    And your qualifications?

Only asking cos in this thread there’s at least one person who works for immigration who ‘knows’ the answer.

And the fact this thread started cos the government have just announced an end to something you’re saying didn’t happen.

My German wife entered and left the UK on numerous occasions using just her German ID card, including one occasion when she "accidentally" found her ex-husband's passport in her handbag instead of her own :D

She can't any more of course, but I can assure you it was allowed back then.

    OK we’re clearly all stupid.

Can you explain to us why Priti Patel has just announced an end to entry using just an ID card. If as you say, it was never possible, why the announcement?

You are wasting your time He is right and you are wrong - facts have nothing to do with it - after all an actual immigration officer on here told him he was wrong and he still doesnt believe it

I've done a lot of travelling to and through Europe. I've seen plenty of ID cards being used over the years, though not as many as passports. As Brush said, we don't have a national ID card, so it couldn't possibly be used.

Also whilst on the continent, travelling between countries is Well, for us, was, unbelievably swift and simple. Numerous times I've boarded a train in one country, and alighted in another. Often without having to show any documentation other than a ticket.

It largely seems to be in Britain where people have a wobble at the thought of people moving about going about their daily lives.

To be fair thats a bad example after all Raab yesterday gave an example of why we need to change the human rights act based on a case over 10 years ago preceding a change in the law in 2014 which means that cant happen anymore even with the human rights act in place
