If it's going to be a European based coach then they're going to have to be in the Stendel/Val mould of a big personality and strong leader. No wet lettuces like Schopp and Assbagi

The last part of your paragraph is the route I think they could go down. Have absolutely nothing to back this thought process up other than just a hunch. There must be some good academy coaches from the premier league clubs who would want a shot at league 1 surely.

 

Nigel Clough could be a good choice to steady the ship, vast experience from the championship down and with a good knowledge of players that could help us wheel and deal to balance the books.
Probably a more realistic target than Warnock or Mick.

 

He is. Tho a record of W3, D3, L1, with one game left has failed to get them into Europe. I reckon if he fails next season, he'll be gone.
So.....the masterplan.....
Warnock for a season to get us promoted as his last hurrah before he really retires again and then Val back for a proper crack at the PL.

By the same reasoning, it would be either Michael Duff from Cheltenham, or Gareth Ainsworth from Wycombe for me, especially Gareth if Wycombe don't go up via the play-offs. We know what happens when we try the cheapest option for first team coach, so this appointment is more important than the recruitment of players in the first instance. Duff fits the bill for coaching expertise, good links with higher level teams and playing good football. Ainsworth fits in knowing the league one set up so well and getting the best out of players on a shoe-string. Two best for me, but I am just not hearing any significant rumours via Brooklands, or the Oakwell car park, so is anything actually going on, other than Devaney being interviewed? Hmmm! Need to get a wiggle on.

 

Warnock certainly seems a popular choice, but what about 'never go back'?

 

It does not come into the equation as he has never managed us before, he obviously played for us but ex players such as Wilson & Heckingbottom were successful when they took the gig although it did not go well for Hendrie .

Win rate of 30% when manager at Rochdale over two seasons.. Need a hell of a lot better than that if we are to be anywhere near the top..

 

I do not understand what you mean , "works like that " but my understanding regarding managers that have returned for a second spell have failed miserably, first Alan Clarke who was catalyst to this club turning its fortunes round in his initial tenure but second time round it went badly & of course Danny who took us to the promised land in his first spell but alas his second spell was turgid at the very least, hence the comments " it never works well second time round " now Warnock obviously played for us in the seventies but has never had the managers gig & if he accepted the challenge should he be offered it then it would be his first crack at the job.

I understood what you meant, I just didn't know 'never go back' worked like that in terms of the mentality applying to ex-managers returning as manager but not ex-players returning as a manager. Then you have people say ex-players shouldn't come back as a player, so the saying was muddied for me. The examples you give are perfectly valid by the way, I just don't think we should always rule it out (ex managers coming back as manager) just because it didn't work with Clarke and Wilson. I wasn't around in Clarke's era, but Wilson was never going to come close to his success first time round. And football now is so changeable from season to season, we forget sometimes how brief a manager's tenure often is. For example, Stendel was only with us for a year and a bit.

 

Clarke's second tenure was far from disastrous. The club was still reeling from the miners' strike, with 7000 considered a good attendance. He kept us a solid second tier side, signed some cracking players and missed the playoffs by a whisker in 88-89, despite having very little money to work with in the transfer market.
