Nonsense... you use brakes to slow down. You are only changing gears so... ...that you are in the appropriate gear to accelerate away once the hazard is clear. e.g. coming up to lights that have just gone to red you can stop in practically any gear (probably not 4th or 5th though) but if the lights have been at red a long time and may change you slow down on the brakes and gear down as you approach. As someone said, what is cheaper to replace- brake pads or gearbox? Only in competition driving would you use both. Oh - and I used to be a driving instructor and if I had a driving instructor telling me to use gears to slow down I would change him/her.
Best way to knacker the rachet is to NOT use the button when applying handbrake... ..I would personally fail a candidate who did not use the button everytime. It is potentially dangerous as it could lead to handbrake failure on a hill which could cause an unattended vehicle to roll away. (Ex-DOI instructor)
RE: Nonsense... you use brakes to slow down. You are only changing gears so... Disagree. But you possibly were taught and instructed in a different era than myself. We were taught the correct use of gears was less likely to induce skids; but mind you with cable brakes, side valve engines, rubber tyres and semaphore indicators, our vintage instructers had probably got it all wrong.
You sound like my tother half He says I put the handbrake on too hard. How can it be on too hard?!?! Better than it rolling off down the hill. I can't help it if you men are too chuffing weak muscled ff
Ya brakes slow ya down, not ya gears And you can move down gears by more than one as well - us women drive right all the time. So there ff
What about movement of gears? Have you been taught to block change i.e 5th to 3rd, or down gears singularly??
