If thats what it takes to stop people using cars as weapons then so be it. In my book what he did was discraceful and should be murder, mind you even if it was murder he would have been out in about 10 yrs, such is the mess of our justice system

because under the law of the land you are innocent until guilty. When you are guilty you are sentenced and once you have served that sentence you are free to go about your business. If you don't agree with that write to your MP and lobby for a change in the law. I confess I don't know the full facts of the case so I don't really have a formed opinion as to whether the punishment fits the crime.

I dont confess to know the full details either but in my opinion the sentences passed down for the majority of crimes is too forgiving. There is no deterrent in this country.

I agree too, however the sentence is just not enough. Sorry close to my heart this one, have two close friends who have lost a brother and a sister to drunk drivers.

So you would do away with the licence system which allows the offender to rehabilitate within the community whilst still under the threat of a return to prison. This allows the prisoner to receive statutory supervision and could actually reduce the risk of reoffending.

Perhaps you would be prepared to pay more tax to facilitate keeping people locked up a lot longer. There is an argument that prison does not work except in a few circumstances such as providing protection from high risk or persistant ofenders.

and as the probation service is understaffed, overstretched and not able to fulfill all the commitments needed to proper rehabilitation, and frequently reporting is now reduced to the bare minimum, purely to satisfy government targets yes in some circumstances i would. this guy killed another person, hurt others very seriously.
who says that all criminals are rehabilitated by being released into the community....do you watch the news when offenders have re-offended, often commiting crimes worse than their original misdemeanours.
6 years should be 6 years............unless he pays personal compensation to the victims.after all he has been allowed out and is a very rich man.

I don't need to watch the news I work in the criminal justice system... and unfortunately there are mistakes made, but often these are parolees and not offenders who have been released at the automatic stage of their sentence. It appears that the Probation Service gets the blame for these mistakes when teh decision to release is ultimately with the parole board.

I agree in that we need more resources put into rehabiliation and perhaps the use as tagging and curfew at parole/licence stage. Maybe the introduction of GPS tagging, so that the tagees whereabouts can actually be monitored more accurately.
