But the meaning of the word has become:

Ordering something that has yet to be released, which is different to ordering something that is readily available. That is an important distinction in the world of e-shopping and is therefore a valid word.

RE: My son is a third year English student at Uni...

Perhaps that is the case.....it does seem over usage though.

Perhaps there is an instance where pre-order has developed from pre-release order....it's certainly not as annoying as "pre-book" because it has no different to book....absolutely none.

I do see what is being meant by pre-order, but why not just say order.

As with hype, overhype....well hype is to excessively promote something....so where does "over" come into it? It's lengthening words but adding no meaning to them.

See my response to Dave below.

I see point there, and what people are meaning.....having said that Ill still just order things whether they are released yet or not!

But hype doesn't necessarily mean you promote it excessively

It means you promote it intensively.
