And Chettle. Bassett made a lot of good decisions, but his discarding of De Zeeuw in favour of three players who weren't fit to lace his boots was unfathomable. Unfortunately, it cost us automatic promotion in my opinion.
Did he actually do that though re De Zeew. I can’t remember exactly. but He was out of contract. And possibly Wigan could not only offer him top flight football. But wages above and beyond what we were prepared to pay. De zeew extended an extra year after relegation but was persuaded by John Hendrie to do that. De Zeeuw was approached by Barnsley later that year, who signed him for a fee of £250,000 during the 1995–96 season. In December 1995, he scored his first goal in English football in a 2–2 draw against Ipswich Town.[4] He was a key player in the side that won promotion to the Premier League in the 1996–97 season. The club were relegated the following year, and it appeared that De Zeeuw was set to leave the club in the summer after turning down a new contract,[5] but was later persuaded by new manager John Hendrie to sign a one-year deal.[6]When his contract expired at the end of the 1998–99 season, he moved to Wigan Athletic.[7]
Of course he did that. He believed Brown, Tuttle & Chettle were better options. As for Wigan being able to offer better wages and top flight football, they were in the third tier at that time! Talk about rewriting history!
Nice one lil. Really need to get checked out Should not have left that bit to the failed memory bank. Didn’t realise Wigan came so late to the premier. Apologies MT for the blip. Going on the fact he refused to sign the year before. It clouded my brain box. Surprised on reflection he ended up at Wigan. In those circumstances. I thought he was miles better than that . And low and behold thought he played in the top flight after us. I’ll make an appointment.
Not touched a drop since lockdown lil. Was even supping 0% at the mount afore the game on Monday. That’s what worries me. Got family round to watch the match tonight. Drinks ready. God knows what I’ll come out with after the game.
