    I did think of something like that, but FTP works, the only limitation being that both devices have to be on the same WiFi network.

    If the cable is ok, might be a trust setting on your phone.
    There’s a fix to reset the trust setting. Sorry, but it’s easier if you google it

    Bit late to this but have you considered the format of the HDD you are trying to connect? I think iOS can only see exFAT, FAT32, FAT, and APFS. If the hard drive is NTFS the iphone wont see it and if you formatted with windows its most likely NTFS.
