    I agree

    Goalkeepers
    Muller - Good enough
    Steele - Good enough
    Letheren - not good enough

    Defenders
    Hassell - Good enough
    Foster - Good enough
Moore - Good enough but for how long?
    Kozluk - Good enough
    Souza - adequate cover
Van Homoet - barely adequate cover
El Haimour - not good enough
    Potter - unknown quantity

    Midfield
    De Silva - Good enough
Colace - Good enough but critical - bosses the midfield when he plays well but we're easily overrun if he doesn't
    JCR - Good enough
    Devaney - adequate cover
Leon - undeniable had his moments but nowhere near consistent enough
Butterfield and Heslop - too soon to say but clearly Davey isn't convinced

    Strikers
Iain Hume - good enough if he ever plays again to this sort of level
Daniel Bogdanovic - too soon to say but has 3 goals so far from 10 apperarances. Only played the full 90 once IIRC. Probably played equivalent minutes of 6 full games.
Jon Macken - too slow - past his best and 7 goals from 31 starts doesn't inspire.
    Loanees - send 'em back

Given that we look likely to lose Steele in the summer:
1 GK, one central defender, one left back, two midfielders and 1 or 2 top-drawer strikers depending on whether Hume returns.
If we see that close season we will have a squad I can see mounting a challenge. But if we see that you'll see my arse on the town hall steps.

So in short, yes, still a long way to go, in spite of some determined performances against teams better placed in this league.

    RE: Yup

With a manager who can get the best out of all his players, and get the team set up to do that - something I don't think Davey can, we'd see a much better season imho.

better journey back. Past Hillsboro. I'm cursed when it comes to away games. Jeff Stelling tip we're safe/League 1.

    To be honest

    I don't think we'll see a managerial change.

Looking at our choices since the premiership season I would say, were we to replace Davey, our chances of appointing someone better would be no more than 50-50
    Scary but true IMO

Not seen us win away in the Championship since Hull. Under Andy Ritchie. With Richards and Hayes up front.

Agreed with that. I would love to see a change in manger in the summer but if we stay up he wont get sacked and Davey will unfortunately get another go next season.

    'Nobody wants to manage Barnsley'

    No, of course not.</p>

Any change is a gamble, and there's no such thing as a certainty. It's too late now with SD but perhaps he needed a more experienced assistant at the start. He wouldn't accept such a move now, and I can see why. he's learning his trade whilst trying to keep one of The Championships smaller clubs in the league. It's a big ask etc.

    Statistically...

...have we ever got zilch from a 6 game sequence under Davey? Don't detach yourself from your head at this late stage of the season, Paul!

I think we're missing quite a few player

We need a left back, left winger, new strikers and an attacking midfielder.

    It's a tough one

If we stay up, he will have done his job this year as well as he did last.
Would you be happy to get sacked for that?

On the other hand, I can't see any scope for short term improvement with him still at the helm and you could argue that his remit this season was to improve on last. However, the logical conclusion of sustained season-on-season improvement is Champions League football. Every club not making the Champions League has to do its best to assemble the best squad they can within the budgetary constraints available. Clubs do have "natural levels" and I think, for the forseeable future, the bottom half of the Championship will be about it for us.

Treading water is frustrating but as I've said elsewhere, is it really worth the risk of appointing a Spackman or a Parkin? Davey is not the best but a long way from the worst manager in recent years.

    RE: It's a tough one

As you have rightly pointed out it is tough. However we have to conisder the time he has had time to assemble a squad and the money he has spent, which is far more than Ritchie and a few others had. On paper i believe we have a decent squad but why are they not improving and gaining consistent results? Didnt Cryne say he wanted season on season improvement? I think Davey did a good job keeping us up in his 1st season under diffcult circumstances and last season was a slight improvement but yet this season we have gone backwards with a supposedly better squad. It's like one step forward and two back with Davey at the helm and i believe another manager would be able to get more out of our current sqaud.

it's faith in pauld's stats that stop me from worrying!!!!

He did something last season which showed that in sequences of games we haven't scored less than 4 (per 6 or 8 matches). I think it is probably the same this season and that stat will do for me now thanks!
