Barnsley had Fibre before 2000 (at least on Park Road) through Telewest...

Barnsley (amazingly) was one of the pilot towns on the initial rollout of Fibre optic BB. I know 'cos we had it. It changed from Telewest to NTL then Virgin. I only changed (to inferior copper) 'cos I went to work for BT Global services and had free domestic/ business phones and BBs (personal and business) as part of my benefits package and working from home some of the time. Still have the cable terminals in our house ready to reconnect!

I learnt quite a lot about how broadband works when I was having trouble with speed a while back. It's right that any of these regular ADSL providers will never be able to make your speed increase by more than a smidge at the most. If you are getting, say, 2meg - an 'up to' 10meg service will be run at more or less the same as something like a 24meg service.

If you're in a virgin area, ditch the landline and get standalone broadband, it will almost certainly be available cheaper than the combined line rental and broadband that you get now and be miles faster as its fibre.

I'm not in a virgin area so I've gone for BT Infinity which is a tad on the expensive side and you still need to pay line rental as the fibre only goes to the street cabinet, the last few yards to your home is done through the regular copper wire but this gives you great speeds but with more variation to virgin who you normally get the full advertised speed from. My bt package is up to 76meg download and up to 19meg upload - in reality I get around 65meg down and 15meg up. The upload speed provided by bt is completely unrivalled although I can't think of any particular reason why this would be useful unless you are someone who uploads tons of hd videos to YouTube or something.

There's also that digital region thing that they dug all the roads up for a few years ago which is an option - not quite sure how many subscribers there will be to that though as it is generally more expensive than bt infinity and isn't as fast. I do know of some businesses that have it though so maybe it is aimed more towards those.
