Andy Yiadom has behaved impeccably for me. Unlike our previous manager, who still somehow manages to go unscathed by so many.
They all want to leave us, let’s be honest. Barnsley born centre back Marc Roberts wanted to leave us. Barnsley born head coach Heckingbottom wanted to leave us. Club captain Hourihane idolised by the fans wanted to leave us. Main striker Winnall idolised by the fans wanted to leave us. Does it really make a difference if they go on Sky? Sign a contract not long before? Kick off demanding a move behind the scenes? We’ve sold ourselves as a club that develops talent & allows them to move on. I didn’t really like it at first & still don’t but I’m used to it now. Put yourself in Yiadom’s shoes, join’s a club, makes loads of mates & part of a very successful team. Within 5 months it’s ripped apart, Bree, Roberts, Hourihane & Winnall are sold, Scowen & Watkins run their contracts down & leave & Kent goes back after his loan. That’s 7 of the first team gone in 5 months. What’s keeping you at the club? Your mates have gone, you aren’t from round here & you know they’re going to be replaced by kids & the next couple of years will be tough. You’ve got your agent in your ear saying you can treble or quadruple or maybe more your wages elsewhere. I’d imagine if I was in his shoes & had no loyalty to Barnsley I’d have done the exact same.
Players just aren't loyal to clubs like they were years ago. It's the way football is run now, with agents king and clubs with their hands tied. Yiadom is no different to any other player. You'll always get players kissing the badge and saying how they love the club etc, but in 6 months or a year theyll be talking and doing the same crap somewhere else. 99% of them are mercenaries, and for those of them who aren't set for life (i.e upper end of premier league players), why wouldn't they be? It's not a criticism of the players, it's just how it is.
I think the last two comments by Titus and Django sum up football as it is now. I must say, football just doesn't mean to me what it did when I was a kid, and that's not because i don't care, its not because i don't love my club, it's simply that there is so little honesty to it anymore. From owners, to players, to media... it might as well go the final step and rig the results, choreographing games for maximum television appeal and mimic American wrestling. I won't be watching the world cup (3rd in a row) and will be thankful of the rest from football. But come August, I'll be eager to see us and full of hope yet again. Only for the next group of would be mercenaries to start their careers with us. Once Hammill leaves (and i hope upon hope he doesn't), I don't think we'll ever see anyone turn down other offers and develop a connection with us like he has. There may be a few players after their careers end that think back on a spell with us if successful with fondness, but "hero".... it just doesn't have the weight of meaning it used to.
