I think you are harsh on Connell, I don’t think there are many better at doing the dirty, unheralded work in midfield at this level. If he was better at the other stuff he wouldn’t be playing in league one. I’m not saying ignore your eyes, I’m suggesting either you aren’t seeing what others do, or that you perhaps need to get a better grasp of what you are seeing. If you took a poll of the twenty three other league one managers and asked them, if they could have one of Connell, Russell, Nwakali or Benson from us on a free, there’d be few takers for anyone but Luca.

Nwakali passes a ball as well as anyone I’ve seen at this level but he can’t defend very well and can’t run - or won’t - especially out of possession. Benson is the only player in the history of anything who is injured more than Max ‘biscuit legs’ Watters. Russell has physical attributes that should make him a capable deep lying player rather than a more attacking mid but you couldn’t trust him to sit nor play in a central two.

Phillips is what he is; sort of a poor mans David Platt. Not really a full on midfielder, and not a forward, but a reliable contributor of goal involvements be it goals or assists and a very fine purveyor of the first time, one touch cross-field ping. To his credit he does put a shift in and try to do the other stuff - he covers the full back well, he gets up and down, no questioning his engine or heart. He has to play. He’d have plenty of admirers too, he’s one that stats do prove the worth of.

Though there is no argument we don’t need centre forwards. I think you are generous saying we even signed an untested one. I don’t think Rodrigues is even an untested striker. He’s no nine. I think he’s a ten at best. And on initial viewings not a particularly technically gifted one. He’s certainly trying though, I can’t knock him for effort.

Signing him and an out of contract lightweight winger when we’ve been playing with DKD and Humphrys up front - who are also not centre forwards either - was absolutely criminal.

So you’re saying that given the choice of Luca , Nwakali ,Philips or even Russell on a free right now that most league one managers would choose Luca Connell ? Are you sure you really believe that ?
