And you only have to look at the guy who was locked up for rape for 17 years when he was innocent to realise how our justice system can sometimes get it so wrong.

Obviously not saying in this case that it is the wrong verdict, but while ever cases like that happen, capital punishment could never ever be considered as an option.

Letby charged with 22 offences of Murder or Attempted Murder.

    Jury found her -

    Not Guilty of 2 Charges.
    Unanimously Guilty of 3 Charges.
    Hung 6 Charges.
    Majority Guilty verdict 11 Charges.

Jury down to 11 - judge wanted at least 10 jurors in agreement.

If the Death Penalty was available and a couple (possibly more) of those jurors was totally opposed to the Death Penalty they would have difficulty finding her guilty. Possibly resulting in Letby now being a free woman.

They say dna evidence is nearly fool proof, but i reckon it can be planted to frame somebody who they think might be guilty just to get a conviction like in the old days with dodgy evidence.

I agree death penalty has to be brought back for instances like this she is just a worthless piece of **** and our money has to look after her the rest of her life.

That's one of the problems with the death penalty though. You can't suddenly say 'we'll bring it back for this person". You either have the death penalty or you don't.

The death penalty actually costs far more money.

Your saying that keeping someone for 50 years and in her case all the protection she’s going to get ,costs more than just flicking a switch and snuffing her out.

What if you kill her and then new evidence comes out which casts doubt on her conviction?

Yes, because it does. (Presuming you meant to say costs less).

The fact that you might one day be on a jury terrifies me.

What worries me is you might be one of these of these pen pushers that worked at the hospital that did buggar all when it was reported to them.

Because I don't want to summarily execute people based on circumstantial evidence?

It costs tens of millions more and prolongs the suffering for the victims/victim’s families whilst the sentencing takes place. There are basically two separate things: the trail and the sentencing. Someone can be found guilty and be on ‘Death Row’ for decades whilst sentencing happens due to the lengthy process of it. Once you’ve killed someone that’s it, so it takes years to reach that final verdict and it to be carried out due to the appeals process. The court cases cost millions of pounds due to the severity and no going back nature of the punishment. Lots of times the millions of pounds are spent in court cases and then life imprisonment is decided instead so you’ve still got the cost of holding them for life but you’ve also wasted millions trying and failing. The victims can’t move on for all that time whilst it’s still ongoing and whilst they made have found peace at the initial verdict of guilty, they may then be upset later at the death penalty not been given which brings all the trauma up again years later.
