Good luck to the lad! Always put in a shift and would have been a good squad player... From comments it would appear that Berry wants more regular football. Realistically he would not get regular slot if Scowen and Hourihane stay fit... We have Digger and Abbott from the academy ready to make step up and LJ will want to introduce his own players... And unless players go out LJ will be restricted on who he can bring in... Just need someone to come in for Bailey and Lalkovic now. Saying that i still feel Lalkovic has something to offer.
Strange decision I think. He's not played in his natural position for us on too many occasions and I think he has the potential to grow a lot. Looking forward to the amount of players we've got to sign yet again.
This news is all over BBC Radio Cambridgeshire tonight, and everyone is "over the moon" with Luke Berry re-signing for Cambridge. Jez George, the Chief Exec of Cambridge United said on radio that he (or Richard Money, the manager - can't remember which) was talking on the phone to Lee Johnson and asked if Berry might be available for transfer. Barnsley said make us an offer. Berry came back from a holiday in Dubai on Friday, and obviously he's gone back to Cambridge.
I wasn't a big fan of him but I am a bit confused by Lee Johnson's criteria for getting rid of players. It seems that the system is if he gave you a chance at the end of the season and you took it then you're gone. Oates was never in the side but given a chance at the end, grabbed it with both hands and got released. Berry wasn't played under Johnson, got a chance at the end of the season and was by far our best performing midfielder who put 100% in and made the others look silly. Gets essentiallymreleased.
I think I might be tempted back to the bright lights of Cambridge as well, as opposed to staying in Barnsley. He's from there isn't he and I presume his family and girlfriend are as well. Good luck Luke, and thanks for your efforts
I can only presume we've recovered what we paid for him (or made a profit?). Disappointed to see him go though. Thought he was nice and tidy, good in the air and comfortable in league 1. Best of luck lad.
A puzzling one for me. Far from the finished product but enough potential to think that he could be developed and improved upon.
Surprised so many have strong opinions on this. Just an ok squad player for me. Wouldn't mind if he'd stayed but not really bothered that he's gone. Surprised to see many say he was a bit lightweight though as one thing I was impressed by was his determination & how many times he'd win aerial battles against taller lads. Hope he does well at Cambridge
Berry made a total of 37 appearances for Barnsley last season 16 June 2015 Last updated at 13:12 Share this page 5ShareFacebookTwitter.print..Cambridge United: Luke Berry's return after 'chance call' Luke Berry's return to Cambridge from Barnsley came after a "chance call" between the two club's managers, says U's chief executive Jez George. Midfielder Berry, 22, rejoined the U's on Monday after one term with Barnsley. "Richard [Money] was on the phone to Barnsley boss Lee Johnson talking about a few things and threw in the question to test the water," said George. "He played a lot under [previous boss] Danny Wilson, but was out of the team for the majority of Lee's time." George continued to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "It was a question worth asking and the response he gave gave us us enough to pursue it." Berry played 128 times for the U's after coming through their youth system, and helped them win promotion back to the Football League in 2014. He joined the Tykes last summer, and after playing 37 games in total, George believes Berry was surprised the League One side would let him go. "I guess it was shock originally as I think he had no idea Barnsley would consider selling him," said George. "But we had a good chat on Saturday morning and he was excited. "Everyone thinks the world of him. We're delighted he could come back and see that there's a real future for the club."
