I didn't, no. I caught the last 60 mins of Tranmere and that wasn't as hoofy. But every other game I've seen so far, it's been without question the most soul destroying visual spectacle I've seen from players in Barnsley shirt, especially given several of them have ability. I very much hope there is more to it that is applied more than a handful games a season.
Since we have been in this never ending Championship survival game for many seasons the number of times we played well but the result wasn`t there was soul destroying now we have got points on the board and got them in SOME games when we probably were poor to watch and maybe a little fortunate, I`ll tek that at the moment cos its summat different. Yes we may still go down but for now I am quite content mid table enjoy watching most games and frustrated with others.
Using their tactics will only work, if the Ref is unbiased. With the lack of cards last night for them, and the one pathetically soft one given out at the end to Mads, I'd say he was not. We stopped a run of three losing games, where we didn't not score in the league in 2021. I should've been quite happy, but I was not. Last night seems to hurt more than the three losses. I don't know whether it is losing a 2-goal lead, or the ineptness of the refereeing, but it still smarts.
I don`t think it was a soft booking it is something Anderson needs to cut out and that is hands on opponents, he is giving away free kicks that are in areas that can hurt us. I don`t think the card was for that particular challenge more of an accumulation. With regard to Cardifff and Moore et al doing the same and getting away with it, don`t we expect that from referees. For me that Flint should have seen red last night but he got nothing. Nelson, Moore and Vaulkes yellow and Woolmer his p45.
Yep, I’ve always considered us a footballing side for the most part. Another thing I’ve considered though - does the football look worse because we’re not there watching it from the stands?
There’s some right winging about Cardiff’s ‘tactics’ and the Ref- ‘‘twas ever thus’. I know. Let’s just get the Players to bring their Nannan’ s to the next game to look after them. FFS stop whinging. It’s professional football. No one is going to lie down and let us walk over them.
As someone who officiated at the top level it was clear from early in the game that Cardiff were employing the dark arts with the main target being Woodrow who Flint and Nelson being the main culprits but others were involved to avoid it being too obvious but they also had done their homework in knowing that Andy Woolmer is a weak referee and at this stage of his career thinks he can man manage a game rather than being able to spot when a team is targeting someone and carding them. This I think is where we need to be less naïve, it is just as important to know your ref as it is to know your opposition. This for me is one of the areas where we need to be more savvy. As I mentioned in my essay about my ideas of how to improve officials in the other thread, there are only circa 19-20 Guys in the second level who we will get this season, use opta or who ever does the stats these days and make sure the players know how to manipulate the official like Cardiff did especially second half. I know it is sad but it is the way of modern football. I used to love turning up to officiate a game and hear words to tune of "Oh no it's that Tw@t today" because what in effect is they were recognising that someone was in charge who would control the game, pick up on any dubious tactics and deal with offenders in the correct manner. (unless of course it was said when my last name was Willard or Kettle)
The thing about a weak referee is that it makes them appear biased because they are so sucked in by one team’s gamesmanship. On Wednesday it seemed that in the second half his default reaction to most incidents was to blow up and point towards the away end. By the time I’d watched that for most of the half, seeing him laughing and joking with McCarthy at full time was just too much. I think if Cardiff hadn’t been so poor in the first half, we could have been talking about a defeat rather than a losing draw because we could have had 90 minutes of him playing to their tune.
