I'm pretty happy with promotion and relegation as they are - before this week I'd maybe have liked the top relegated side to take part in the playoffs of the league below, but now with the cap I think it would just entrench the divide.

I recall when automatic relegation was first brought in from the fourth division Burnley had been relegated from division 3 for the very first time in their history. At the end of the season they were in very real danger of being the first club to be relegated from the fourth division and in their inaugural season in that league. In the end they won the last match of the campaign and other results went their way and so they were spared that indignity.
At the time I remember thinking that it would have been a bit of a travesty for a club that had spent pretty much all of its life in the upper tiers to be the first to suffer the fate of automatic relegation from th football league.

I'd put the blame on those who were running the club and team at the time, rather than the procedure of relegation.

I don’t disagree with you. But as you say the same old teams had been getting re-elected year after year and the first time that relegation was in place a team that was in division 4 for the very first time nearly fell through the trap door. At the time it seemed cruelly ironic

Efl is only 3 leagues now, premier league is run by the FA so by the same logic champs to prem should be 2 up and 2 down
