Well its a team game & Mads would be the first name on the sheet for me , its the other 10 required to go with him where the problems might be, I will leave it to Mr Duff to sort !
I'm not disagreeing with any ofthat at all and I know we do position ourselves as a stepping stone which is right. I guess the question is over what is a fair fee. I don't always think we as a club have got that quite right, we certainly didn't under Conway who thought any sale above what we paid for a player was a reflection of his supreme ability as a CEO. Part of setting a fair fee is also judging how in demand a player might be. And Andersen with a year left and after an outstanding season will be in demand. So I think we can be both fair to Andersen by not standing in his way and also get a fair fee for the club
I don't think anyone is saying we should 'block' any bids for Mads. However it is a far cry from some on here who seem to actively be saying we should sell him for his own benefit and short term 'profit' . BFC is not a 'charity' and hopefully we have stopped donating our best players to rivals for knock down prices. We should do everything possible to try and persuade him and any relevant first team players to give it one more season. In the first instance. retaining him and failure to get promotion would NOT mean "£1.5 million down the drain" as someone has posted since it does not take into account the cost of replacing him and the fact we would still have to offer substantial wages to attract a decent replacement, not to mention the biggest factor of the uncertainty of whether that replacement will work out. If it aint broke -don't fix it! Secondly, it is by no means certain that Mads would 'lose out' as another season like the one he has had (given he is still pretty young) is only going to improve his stock and he is guaranteed a first team place at Oakwell rather than possibly bench warming in a top Championship side (as well as another year with a Manager he respects and a 'happy' environment where he is loved by teammates and fans). Money talks and it is a short career but how many players have left a club after a successful season and ended up in the doldrums?
why cant we offer him a new deal!? He loves the club - that's obvious, and we love him. Him staying would signal intent and be a big pull for the rest of the group to stay too. Id sooner offload some fringe players to keep him.
these big calls can make a season. If we had held onto morris for this season just gone we'd have pissed this league I'm sure.
I'm sure we will offer him a deal. Probably already have done. But given some of the crazy salaries being offered by Championship clubs, he's not going to accept. Particularly while we're in League 1.
Why is that right? Why should Barnsley be a 'stepping stone' How many League clubs view themselves that way? That attitude, IMO, is part of the problem that the owners have to address.
we have to let him go for me. Would cost us about 2m to keep him next season. Can’t justify that IMO. We could sign 3 or 4 players with that.
The assumption is that for 100% of players it is 100% about the money. Whilst probably the case for most, there is sometimes more to personal career development than a short term instant gain It is not just football clubs that speculate to accumulate. Sometimes individuals can benefit from taking things a bit more 'piano-piano'
Yeah coupled with the fact it's easier to replace players for Barnsley F.C to the required standard in League 1. I'm with Shakespeare. It's all " Much adoo about Nothin'".
If we do sell him then we should be looking at realising his true value - a CH who would walk into most champ teams should be worth 5m+ If we keep letting quality players go for peanuts we'll never make this system work. We'd be better off keeping him, running his contract down, and getting promoted rather than giving him away for next to nowt - which 1.5m would be! An absolute travesty if we sold him for that. But... we know it would be undisclosed anyway. They don't like to say what their dealings are these days.
I find it sad that Barnsley fans appear to have become 'settlers' I know over the past few decades Barnsley and surrounding districts has had the stuffing knocked out of it with one setback after another but some of these comments suggest the fight has been knocked out of the support. People seem increasingly prepared to accept that we are a League One side and content to 'yo-yo' between Championship /League One and continue to " ... position ourselves as a stepping stone which is right......"?? being a feeder of developing talent for 'richer' clubs. FFS! Whatever became of the ambition and dream to rise above it. Once or twice in a genaration, an opportunity arises to break the cycle. I believe this is one such moment but only if owners, fans and players are bold enough to go for it. If people are content to continue in this way for as long as they follow BFC then fair enough but it is a self fullfilling prophesy that if nothing is changed nothing will change. Duff has vision and ambition. The players, fans and owners need to back those if they are to come to fruition. Otherwise what is the point of BFC?
I agree. I won't be subjecting George to be thankful "apple, orange and stick of coil" mantra. Hopefully last Monday was the start of a new prophecy.
Arghh! You done me wrong!!!! Having been a parent of a small child and attending parties when Agadoo was all the rage you have reminded me of one of my most hated 'bands' and albums. It was even popular at adult parties (God only knows why' ). Never in the field of popular music has so much money been made from such cr*p music. Half of it sounded like the backings were done on a children's Bontempi keyboard. Unfortunately they were not even 'one hit wonders' having recorded such abominations as 'Superman' the 'Birdie Song' and the ubiquitous 'Music Man'. If they had used that album on looped repeat at Guantanamo Bay, water boarding would have been totally unneccessary.
It won't just be about the money, it will also be about the player wanting to play at a higher level. For me, the main thing is that we get the correct valuation on him. One that allows us to replace him while keeping some profit. That is, assuming he won't sign a new contract, which I assume he has been offered.
Duff has another summer to improve the squad and their performance. Look at the difference between the second half of the season to the first. And we were only seconds from a penalty shoot out, so couldn’t have come much closer
