It's the same with shin pads in football. They're supposed to protect the players but they push and push and push until they're wearing a a little piece of pad just few millimetres in size just to meet the rules.
I’ve seen it, was posted a on a lads chat and before I realised what it was I had seen it. Please nobody search it out, it’s horrendous. RIP Adam and I hope the other player involved gets all the support he needs.
They don't need to look for a system, it's mandatory in almost all forms of ice hockey until you get to the top level for some bizarre reason.
Just making them mandatory wouldn't be enough for me. The guards now, even for juniors aren't that substantial. A piece of padded material but i think a redesign would help too. Net minders have a guard that hangs from the helmet nowadays. They of course are involved in more risky situations. im still gutted by all this and it hasnt fully sunk in.
I'm surprised they don't go for a simple chain mail, the type of thing they use as protective gloves in the meat trade.
Reminds me of a picture I saw of Callum Styles last week after his goal against Shrewsbury. It's as though he isn't even wearing any they're that small these days.
I think a lot of players will go for more protection of their own volition. I don’t however think further protection should be mandatory. As horrific as it was it is a complete one off. People who have been involved in the sport for decades saying they’ve never seen anything like it. It could organically lead to better protection and more people using it, and that’s fantastic. But it’s extremely unlikely it’ll even happen again in our lifetimes.
English Ice Hockey rule update 1. SHORT TERM (Immediate): The EIHA makes a “strong recommendation” that all players at all levels across English Ice Hockey use an approved Ice Hockey Neck Guard/Protector whilst participating in all on ice activities. This “strong recommendation” is in place until 31 December 2023, after which it will become a mandatory requirement. It is not mandatory with immediate effect due to anticipated supply issues. This will be under constant review between now and mandatory implementation. All protective equipment must be worn without alterations and as directed by the manufacturers’ specification.
Seen the footage, looks like the Steelers player “superkicks” him, a lot of folk saying it was momentum, only the player knows I guess, either way it doesn’t look good.
It's happened twice in the NHL, on the last occasion the doctor on site had experience of catastrophic injury as a combat medic in the US forces.
It isn't a one off though is it? I thought a goaltender suffered a very similar incident a few years ago but survived and that a junior player abroad had a similar accident last year. When there is a very simple but effective form of protection available I think it's absolutely bonkers that it isn't mandatory.
Of course it was his momentum. Are you seriously suggesting that he might have meant to make contact with his opponent? Even if we forget for a moment that there would be absolutely no reason for him to intentionally endanger an opponent's life, how in the world could anyone, having unexpectedly collided with one opponent, make a split second decision to kick out at another one while perfoming an involuntary cartwheel wearing full hockey gear? The very idea that it might have been intentional is utterly preposterous. By the way, I know that the police are investigating but I'm pretty sure that's just a matter of standard procedure when there's a death in such unusual circumstances involving another person.
Just seen it for the first time, and a matter of coincidence were going to the Steelers next game as part of the young uns junior football club. Never seen a game of ice hockey live before but good god, that does not look good at all. That's why it's best left to the experts to investigate.
Accident. Just that. You’re the second person, in this thread, wanting to turn a tragic accident into a murder conspiracy. Please just remember that someone died and others have to live with the consequences.
and according to some folk from a West Yorkshire backwater the Yorkshire Ripper victims actually all headbutted his hammer.
It looks to me like the sort of high-speed collision that happens at ice hockey games all over the world.
It 100% is. The only people claiming it's anything more than an accident are people that have never watched an ice hockey game. Combined with the usual right wing racist nutjobs on twitter.
