I think this was a very difficult situation and the police couldn't win.

They are following what they believe to be a potential suicide bomber. They shout whatever instructions they did and he ran. Maybe he didn't understand English, maybe he was deaf, maybe he didn't realise they were police, although I would have presumed that the police revealed their identity in the chase. Even so, he's ran from them. Yes, he could have been a drug dealer or anything, but even so he ran from them and onto a tube full of passengers.

What can the police do? They can't risk a 'hands up' call because if he is suicide bomber he will detonate his bombs. They can't shoot at his chest because if he is loaded with bombs as they suspect, the shot will trigger them off putting the passengers on that tube at risk.

It's unfortunate that an innocent person has lost his life, but the police did what they thought was right and I don't think they can blamed for protecting the lives of other people in that process.

    RE: It sounds daft indeed...

I still don't understand why they had to shoot him in the head five times though! And from close distance too, when they had apparently already caught him... I would have understood if they had tried to stop him by shooting him in the leg, but executing someone innocent like this isn't just unfortunate in my opinion, it's scandalous.
To people who say something like "tough luck, better safe than sorry"... ok, but what if the victim had been a close friend of yours or a family member?

They aren't telling us everything and the witness reports aren't helping very much either ("I saw some wires coming out of his jacket" ?!!) The policemen weren't apparently even wearing uniforms, who knows if they had even pulled out their guns when they started to chase him...

How come you are so quick to condemn the security forces for one mistake that they state is a tragedy but not a group of Muslims who kill over 50 people?

How does the shooting of an innocent Brazilian man have anything to do with Muslim suicide bombers?

Nobody is failing to condemn those bombers.

I think you're confusing the issue.

All Acky said was that it's a 'tragedy'

If shooting innocent people can't be described as a tragedy I don't know what can. Can't for the life of me understand why that should result in Acky getting abuse.

Thank christ I'm not a member of the security services who had to make the decision to shoot him. A more difficult job I can't imagine. And, on the whole, the way the police have conducted themselves throughout this very difficult time has made me very proud to live in this country. But if we can't question why an innocent man has been shot without being told to **** off then there's summat wrong.

burly men with Id badges that shouted 'STOP POLICE'. He then chose a tube station to run into and made his way straight for a packed train.

If the police didnt shoot him then the public on that train should quite rightly have ripped his head off instead. Imagine how scared they would have been seeing a man with a big coat and jacket vaulting a tunstyle and running straight at the train they were on.
im sorry but if i was on that train hed have had my foot straight in his head before i even thought about it. Self defence comes first

RE: I suspect the information you've got that he ran away

Whilst it obviously is a tragedy, I don't think the 'shoot to kill' policy should be changed, given the current circumstances. The problem is, though, what should an innocent member of the public do, if caught in such a situation. How would you know if the police were genuinely police if they were in plain clothes? I think the responsibility is now on the police to publicise how they make such 'arrests' in public places and how innocent members of the public should behave if they are the intended target. We need publicity on TV, radio, Internet and, especially on public transport. A simple, but direct poster should do the trick.

Maybe he was deaf or couldn't understand English? That doesn't explain him hurdling barriers... I'm absolutely sure that the police would have made it clear they were police pretty damn quickly.

I think it's hard to assess this...

As we don't know all the facts. I heard that they did shout 'police' numerous times... it depends where and what you read, and lets face it we don't know who to believe.

IF he was carrying a bomb, he would have probably detonated if he had just been wounded i.e. a shot in the leg.

Anti-terroist police are trained to aim for the head - a fatal blow to prevent this happening.

As I've said, this was an unfortunate but understandable incident.

    RE: Fatty Asian looking bloke

gotta agree. "fatty asian looking bloke" who runs in terror from gun wielding men in suits. best execute them all.

    considering he was brazilian.

don't you wish you were the one who got to tell his parents? "Sorry Mrs. your son was shot to death by the police. That'll teach you Catholic Brazilians to give birth to children who look like fatty asian looking blokes" Then you could smack her in the face for crying.

I hope none of you and yours resemble middle eastern/asian blokes. The best you can hope for then is having your brains beat in...the shot out.

There appears to be a lot of FACTS in this thread though.

I don't understand the five times... but if he was only shot in the leg he could have detonated his bomb if he had had one.

    RE: It sounds daft indeed...

Apparently they're trained to use multiple shots to ensure the suspect is completely immobilised ASAP. Otherwise a random twitch of the body - even an involuntary spasm - could cause detonation.

They have to do it to protect themselves and us - and we have to support them.

Hopefully the message will get through to the scum and they'll start to think twice.

So an innocent person has to die to get the message through to the scum? Sorry Ian, I think this was panic policing which has done this country more harm than good.

RE: You're dead right, we don't know

No one knows the true facts...even the witnesses reports are conflicting. So why then, are people making deductions about what happened? For every person that says they shouted POLICE, there are others who say no shouts were heard. Why base your argument on the fact that "It was his own fault"..when you don't know the true facts. It could have been a young, angry police marksman who wanted revenge for the previous weeks deaths.
