    Maldini, Brehme, Roberto Carlos and Lizarazu in my lifetime.

    Marcelo definitely in that sort of company though I would say. And Ashley Cole perhaps.

    My old man said Krol of the famous Dutch side in his day was very good and of course, Breitner for the Germans.

    Like Roberto Carlos, he was great going forward, but in terms of his defensive work he's eclipsed by lots of great left backs.

    I don't remember the older players on here, but in terms of where Marcelo ranks against the other players, I don't disagree.
