Hemmsy, seems to me that your definition of war is that it has to be on a world scale, which is why you mention Germany?

There are many examples of "smaller scale" wars : Falkland, Vietnam, Iran, etc.

You should continue posting Hemmsy, but do read and absorb what's being said, then you will learn more (Mario Kempes, Jay, ark104,Stahlrost, DSLRed, Prince of Risborough are just a few BBS posters who "educate" me regularly....as did Cricket Jim until his banning order).

Proof, if proof were needed, that you're not really with this debate at all. Or any others, probably. Where on earth do you get the idea that WWII ended in 1943?
Unless you have something intelligent to add, maybe you should watch the cricket. I'm doing that right now

That's a headline about Iraq from 2006. I thought we were talking about Afghanistan. I have no trouble with you calling it a conflict. It is one. It's also quite clearly a war. The two words have very similar meanings. They're interchangeable. The trouble starts when you correct people and say it definitely isn't a war despite being shown articles that define war and refer to the war in Afghanistan.

Are you so convinced it's not a war because someone once said that to you? Are you just repeating what that someone told you without actually thinking about it for yourself?

If so, do you think that's a sound basis for an argument? Was the argument worth it anyway when this thread clearly wasn't about that?

If this is aimed at Supertyke I'm sure a few Royal Marines would just LOVE the chance of a 121 discussion with him. They would be delighted to educate him about the rights and wrongs of putting military personnel working in a theatre of extremely stressful operations up for trial on a charge of murder.

As I understand it a war is classed as a prolonged state of continuous violence between two or more organised, armed groups, whether national or transnational organisations. War is characterised by the mobilisation of large groups of armed men fighting for discernible gain, such as land or resources.

Conflict on the other hand is a prolonged state of hostility or aggravation between two or more organised groups that encompasses a wider variety of factors, whether these are political or economic.

Israel is in almost perpetual conflict with most of the Middle East, rarely do they go to war. Iraq/Afghanistan seems to fit the war description imo, though we aren't technically at war with either country, rather a group of people within the country. I think.

Not many people know this, but World War II did end in 1943 indeed. It then became World Conflict II that lasted until 1945.

And so as the man who sent us into this war/conflict he should know what is is right?

''though we aren't technically at war with either country, rather a group of people within the country.''

    Correct JPTykes.
Jouno's will often say war when it isn't. Not sure why they do that but it isn't a war.

That's far more articulate, intelligent and shows a good deal more knowledge on the subject than anything I've come out with. For a while there we had the blind leading the blind. Thank you for rescuing us from ourselves. It got to the point where I could no longer be sure when world war II ended.

I must doff my cap to you Hemsworth. Despite being unable to provide any evidence to back up your argument, or give any sort of reasoning or explanation why you believe your position to be true, and even when quoting an entire post that pretty much contradicts what you have said, despite a small caveat in the last line, you've still managed to claim victory. That's pretty impressive stuff.
