Are the games vs Marine, Rhyl and Altrincham the only defeats we've suffered to non league opposition in the cup? I'll be honest, I'd heard of the Enfield and Bromsgrove games, but didn't realise we'd been beaten by Rhyl and Marine in the past. The only other non league team I can remember us playing in the cup is Chester a few years ago, where we won the replay. That first leg is as bad a game I've ever seen.
I'd love us to play Marine again, if only to get a bit of revenge for 1975. Assuming, of course, we were able to win!
The trip back home after the game in 1975 was one of the longest and most painful I've endured. Not for the time taken, but knowing your team was bottom of the entire Football League and had been deservedly thrashed by a team from the lower reaches of the non league pyramid. I couldn't see Jim Iley surviving beyond the Monday morning (if that) and expected to see us fail to be reelected back into the league at the end of the season. Needless to say, proving I knew as much about football then as I do now, the results and quality of football improved and we finished the season comfortable in mid table.
lol mate. Same thing happened after the Altrincham game, must give pro footballers a proverbial kick up the backside and to buck their ideas up
Didn’t make that game. Lil. (not sure why.) Honestly don’t remember us being rock bottom. I know I’ve seen us flirt with re-election. ( not doubting you btw) But were we that bad. I Must have blocked it from mi memory. , I remember folk seeing that game going ape. About how crap we were. Good game to miss I suppose. , And some moan that we’ve never had it so bad as in the last few years.
Rotten swine! As a know-it-all teenager, I couldn't believe just how poorly we'd played. I can still remember feeling it was the end of the world!
Think you saw our low point v Marine? I only had 5 days to walk from London to Goodieon in me clogs in 1910 for yet another replay, only to see us get thrashed by the toon. Wouldn’t have been too bad but I had to report in every night for a shift darnt dodeth pit for no pay, in fact I had to pay them tuppence for the pleasure of keeping me job and then get back to my walk to Liverpool by noon. Ayyyy these young whipper snappers don’t know they were born, nivver thought we’d win cup after that day, proper gutter low.... ...but what did I know?
Sadly, old mate, we WERE rock bottom for a few weeks. The upturn in results and performances was totally unexpected.
At the end of the promotion clinching Bradford City match in 1997, I reflected how far we'd come since being beaten by the likes of Rhyl, Marine, Aldershot, Southport, Barrow & Workington. You're absolutely bang on, it did make our success taste that much sweeter, after experiencing so many lows.
Now now Kev “ the likes of Rhyl, Marine, Aldershot, Southport etc.... “ you should no better. Unless of course you’re in the middle of a house move to S6 and have omitted to mention it.
Believe it or not lil. I’ve done. 101 league clubs away. Only Rhyl ( although not a league club as is marine) amongst that lot. Really kicked on in the early 90s travelling regularly to away games. Didn’t we win or lose 7-0 against Workington once. My Memory plays tricks at times.
Whoops! You're spot on. I shouldn't have posted it, it's wrong and I apologise. I'll spend the rest of the evening looking at photos of Nurse Gladys as a suitable punishment.
