    I do like Mark Robins.

    He always speaks so nicely about us, when he'd be entitled to hold a grudge about how it ended for him at Barnsley.

    I think he plays terrible football, out of necessity because he always ends up with a low-budget club, but he gets results.

    Mowatt is the biggest damp squib. He never takes a chance at any forward pass you mentioned. I still don't know what type of midfielder he is, after originally thinking he was a "no.10". He's been used as a holding midfielder, box to box... I don't know, there's a lot of mismatch in that midfield.

    Said it for a while about Mowatt. He's a trier and puts himself about, but he's not creative. Just does a job distributing sideways and mopping up, sometimes.

    Both times we've played Luton I've watched Mpenza win the ball or get the ball and carry the team 30/40 yards up the pitch. I think we're missing someone with the ability to do that as much as we're missing a striker. I thought it was Mowatt but he's too happy playing the simple, short ball as he doesn't really have the pace or the strides to surge forward. Styles could do this as his first instinct is to get on the front foot.

    Ultimately means you need to find a different role for him in the team within the midfield.

    Do you reckon it's a case of Mowatt having a lazy/slow "footballing" brain, or is he just not a Championship level player? Cos he was a talisman in League One.

    I think he's still a really good footballer. I worry about how reliant he is on his left foot to be classed as real Championship quality though.

    He's one of those players that is worth more to us than any team he potentially signs for (if that makes sense). Always thought he was perfect for playing the left of the diamond role but he's played there so infrequently under Struber.

    If you look back to that prolific period Chaplin had last season, many of the goals he scored were a result of Jacob Brown getting beyond the defence and cutting it back to him. I genuinely can't remember when we last put in a ball like that.

    Even the run at the end of last season (which I'm not underplaying, the Brentford game will remain one of my favourites in all the time I've been watching Barnsley) was achieved by an astonishing amount of hard work, primarily by Brown and Chaplin, but aided by the midfield, in keeping the opposition in their own half, rather than us creating many chances. We actually sacrificed our best goal scorer as there was little point in playing him. Woodrow (and Schmidt) aren't all that great at defending from the front, and as we weren't creating anything for them to feed on (other than the banzai final few minutes when we went all in) then their selection was a waste of a place in the team.

    We've seen it happen on the left. Ritz, for all his obvious faults, has put some decent balls in to the box from there this season. The issue has been either someone failing to attack the space or it falling to the wrong player on the edge of the box. Reading springs to mind on the latter (think it fell to Lundwig). The reason it happens on the left as oppose to the right, where Brown was, is because we're so heavily left footed in midfield. We rely on Lundwig playing well and almost single handedly driving us down that side of the pitch - if he's off his game like the first half yesterday we just look poor. Also why we looked better/more balanced with Frieser on the pitch.

    Agree. But Schmidt has improved massively in this area recently to be fair to him. Against Boro and Chelsea he did lead the press well.

    It ended for him at Barnsley because he walked away, not because we sacked him, so why would he bear a grudge? He decided to end his tenure

    His contract ended and we didn't offer him another. In fact, we announced 9 months before his contract ended that we wouldn't be offering him another. He wasn't sacked, but if he'd turned up in June for the start of preseason he wouldn't have had a job. He had a fixed length contract that was allowed to expire and there was no offer of a new one.

    Didn't Robins tell them to go do one as they wouldn't put up the funds for transfer. He technically told them he was leaving, so there was never any offer put to him

    I don't know what happened in private conversation between Patrick and Mark, but what I've relayed was the official line as told to us. Robins never said anything about it, whether that was because he chose not to or signed a non-disclosure agreement, I don't know. Maybe both.

    I think Freiser will come good, as I alluded to in another post. He works hard and gets into scoring positions. He now just needs things to click.

    As for "creative midfielders", I love to watch Styles, and he will only get better (Glavin Mark II, hopefully).

    It seems to be a combination of the two. I'm not sure whether it is confidence, but no one wants to take responsibility. We pass it around the box until we lose it, rather than shooting. Also, when we do shoot it is extremely wayward, or if on target, soft and at the keeper.

    Mowatt only supplied two assists less than Brown last season. While I'm on the subject, 40% of last season's assists are no longer in the match day squad: Brown 10 (departed), Bahre 3 (Out of Favour), B Williams 1 (injured), Diaby 1 (suspended), Cavare 1 (departed).

    Mark Robbins was/is a principled man, that's why he resigned from BFC. The day he left he came around the ground to all the staff present that included the office, ticketing, shop, maintenance staff, shook their hands and thanked them for their their help, whether they gave him any or not. What a comparison to Hill and Flitcroft when they left. In September 2012 the Coventry chairman rang Don Rowing about Robbins, Don's advice was sign him he's a top manager.

    Was he? At what point in Stendel's winless run was Mowatt a talisman? You can argue he was by the way, but not by comparing the performances and results of the Stendel/Struber sides. We were poor under Stendel overall, but maybe he looked better in a team playing attack attack attack football? He then left acres of space in behind like most of the midfield and wing backs did.
