    RE: People smoking

It isn't actually breaking the law to smoke in the stands as they aren't enclosed buildings. The football authorities have decided to use the opportunity to ban smoking inside grounds, but that is just a local decision. It probably is against the law underneath the stands, but not behind the west stand as it is open.

Therefore, they could choose to chuck you out etc, but you could not be fined for breaking the law.

    RE: People smoking

In the East Stand Upper Tier the stewards commented that they had caught at least 10 fans who were smoking and they was a steward in the gents toilets between gangways 10 & 11 at half time. So this stand the stewards are clearly on the look out and doing their job.

i think its 3 sides and a roof that counts as enclosed but i may be wrong, corner of west wouldnt actually be covered however seen as its now a non smoking stadium doesnt matter

Found this on the Barnsley site

    http://www.barnsleyfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/InsideOakwellDetail/0,,10309~1063967,00.html

"In endorsing the policy the minister said "It's great to see the Football League taking such as forward looking approach, which goes above and beyond the requirements of the smoke free legislation that is being introduced"

and this on a Bournmouth site:

    http://www.bournemouth.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=48076

A football league statement regarding a nationwide ban read...

'The Football League has announced the introduction of a 'smoke free` policy, to take effect from the beginning of the 2007/08 season.

This new policy anticipates and exceeds expected government legislation in this area. Consequently, smoking will not be permitted throughout stadium confines from July 2007 onwards...'

They should have a designated smoking pen

and charge a pound to get in it. A nicotine tax. Extra revenue always welcome.

Its not though is it? Thats just my point. people are now gathering in an enclosed place with the stench and choking smoke being many times worse than it was before.

    Ah but..

non smokers want it all their own way though, they want it banned everywhere,no compromise, where as smokers only want a smallsection to smoke in.which could be between the ponty and the west stand as it is totally uncovered.</p>

smokersdon't wanta place to smoke sothey can taunt non smokers, they just want to mind their own business and have a cig.</p>

its not much to ask really is it. I'd say at least 20% of people in the ground smoke but none are catered for.</p>

smokers arn't criminals and smokeing isn't going to be cut out over night, it'll take time, maybe a couple of generations from now even.</p>

Personally I can go a couple of hours without a cig, but some find it harder than others to control the habit, especially when we are getting battered 4-1.:D </p>

ive never seen out like it in the open bit between the west stand and ponty

Went round there to make a phone call but made a hastily retreat after walking into a wall of smoke! It was just this fog rising from the crowd. lol - so funny watching the afflicted almost sprinting to the outside desperate to get their fags lit. Bit sad if you ask me.

    Probably explains

why I was wondering what people were on about.

I didn't see anyone smoking, went down to the toilet and half time and what a pleasure it was for the concourse not to full of smoke and there wasn't anyone smoking in toilets either.

    Smoking, fitlthy pointless habit/addiction.

I’m fed up of hearing from Smokers who are complaining about Human Rights issues. Why should non smokers suffer then.

It’s not about been selfish it’s about people who don’t smoke, not having to put up with passive smoking which is what has happened for god knows how many years.

    RE: Ah but..

Totally agree. As an ex smoker (18 months now) I can see both sides of the argument and whilst I personally welcome non smoking in pubs, restaurants and in the seating at football grounds I think we've gone too far the other way and are now starting to persecute smokers.

Does it really hurt to allow smoking in the open corner between the Ponte and West Stand ?

I've already heard people now complaining of all the smokers being in the beer garden or on streets outside offices and factories. The media have had a pop at smoking whilst driving. Where does it stop ?

The government should either ban it completely (which they won't for tax reasons) or leave it be.

What are you trying to say here, ban driving in bars and restaurants?

Not as distracting as having a child on board.....

    ........should that be banned too.

In fact why stop there, let's ban radios, sat nav's, having an itch, passengers, adverse weather conditions, pedestrians, etc etc

    Worlds gone mad.
