Niva got out of 2nd gear and when we did Burton looked like a rabbit int headlights. Kane not at top of his game and Russell improved but still looks nervous. O'keefe in for me and will be interesting to see who loses out to Connel..liked the look of Cosgrove tho
Comfortable win and we look to be getting to grips with Collins tactics although as bad as Burton were they still had 2 or 3 good opportunities so still room for improvement. Things definitely look to be gelling nicely though and squad depth seems good so hopefully onwards and upwards from now.
I think Cotter is still work in progress...he has pace and can go by people...its just his decision making...O Keefe is just far better errr imho...very confident and positive in and out of possession...and is like a poor man's trent Alexander Arnold...he defo changed the dynamic when he came on and looked ace
What told a major story for me today was that despite Cotter being in acres of space for most of the game and demanding the ball more often that not the team just ignored him - almost like they don’t really trust him.
Some really good performances today from a number of players inc Cole, Mcatee, Russell and the back 5 I thought we controlled the game well, a very mature performance. Feels like there could be more to come, hope so. I might end up buying @Jay a few beers after all
I still say we can’t have both Kane and Russell in midfield. Both are so passive and slow. Said it before and it is really obvious, but getting Luca Connell into this team makes us so, so much better. Hopefully he gets over whatever his ailment is (rumours of glandular fever - that is nasty and can take months) soon enough, as watching us you can see we are missing something, maybe a bit of bite and urgency, in the middle. Russell is massively improved from last season, I’m pleased about that, but for me he’s still far too ponderous, doesn’t sense any danger (not that there was much today), and is quite slow to react when required to make any kind of recovery run. Where was Styles today as well? Did he come back from Hungary injured or something? He’d play over Kane for me on current form. He’s not had a good game yet this season, seems to be treading water, just going through the motions.
Really, thought he was a contender for MOM. First 25 minutes he was running the show until they decided to man mark him. Even then he was still pulling the strings
We actually thought Burton targeted the middle two after half time and for a period were winning the mid field battle. this was their best period of the game but made Kane/ Russell less effective until we started pushing the ball wide and O'keefe and Cadden came into the game..in my opinion
I think it's great that we can show constructive criticism after win. It shows we aren't settling for second best and more importantly means there's clearly improvement and another gear to this team.
Unbelievably, Huddersfield won promotion to the PL with a negative goal difference in 2017. They also didn't score a goal themselves in their 3 playoff games (SW scored an o.g. at Hillsboro) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_English_Football_League_play-offs
That was absolutely brilliant from the Barnsley fans today standing up as well, proud today with that, its not always bad at Oakwell.
I don’t see where all the love for Herbie Kane comes from. He’s not a bad player but others obviously see something in him that I never have. Too negative and too many misplaced passes today. Apart from that I enjoyed seeing us win again. Shame Dev missed out on another hat trick and shame we had yet another useless ref, incapable of spotting obvious and sometimes violent fouls on our players. Two penalties ignored as well?
Didn't see today's game, but generally I think you can see that had he got some pace he might have got closer to the Liverpool first team. Good vision and generally good passing.
Don’t think he’d ever have got anywhere near their first team. I’d say he improved after his spell at Oxford but i struggle to see anything in him that suggests he will get any better
My highlight from the ref was when he told our player that it wasn’t handball and pointed towards his elbow. Really poor ref I thought
Thought we controlled the game pretty much all the way. 1-0 is a dangerous score line but still felt we controlled it. Both goals were superb. For different reasons, of course. I thought the Kane shot was handball. Their defender charged at him with his arms in the air. Anyone seen the highlight of the disallowed goal? I thought it was on but sometimes being in the stands can distort the view. On to Tuesday now and I’d expect it to be a much tougher game but hopefully we can take some confidence in to it.
I'll be drinking pints of Pina Coladas. The bet did include a meal too didn't it? And a holiday to the Caribbean.
