The hit and hope over the top was particularly depressing. I can't remember a game where collectively we were so bad at passing. So many misplaced, hopeless passes. A bad day at the office.
Fairly clear after 10 mins we didn’t have a clue how to approach dealing with Exeter today. They won’t have an easier away win all season.
Liam Kitching was one of our better players today, but even better this evening dancing on Strictly with Ellie Simmonds
Pre match in the fanzone, our midfield was being discussed as “the best in the division”. That was a horror show. Kane and Benson were so wasteful.
Herbie Kane was woeful today. And Josh Benson showed himself for what he is - a game changer and quality when he’s got a team around him to do his running and ball winning. When the going gets tough and he needs to roll his sleeves up though, he jogs round aimlessly and then stands with his hands on his hips when it doesn’t go his way. He’ll score some worldies. He’ll win us games at this level. But he’ll also cost us games with his lack of application and grit. We saw that last season. He’s a luxury we won’t always be able to afford. But that’s the price you pay to have quality like he has at the level we are at. If he had a better all round game and defensive quality to go with his quality in the ball he wouldn’t be here. For me we probably need to play Luca Connell as one of the middle two, and then Kane or Benson with him on a horses for courses basis - or switch to two up top and a middle three with Benson a little further up. He can’t play in a two with Kane all season.
Yep thing they showed today was that neither of them are happy at having the ball at their feet to try and beat a player.
Kane looks and plays like he is 47 years old. I'm 43 and there's not a chance he's younger than me. Nigerian birth certificate that lad.
