But that is the beauty of football. In fact, that’s the beauty of most things in life. That human beings get different things out of something.

This discussion feels very similar to those held during Ismaël’s campaign. Where opinion seemed divided. Some loved that approach to the game (me included). Others found it awful to watch. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

I like front foot football. Aggression. Graft. An evident team spirit. If that’s married to super slick passing football or route one tactics, I really don’t care. It’s winning football I enjoy the most.

I don’t profess to be a purist. Whatever that is. But I’m realistic. I know what my club is, I know the limitations and so I’d rather an ethos, a strategy that is based upon things that don’t cost.

While clubs like Chelsea can spend hundreds of millions each window there probably ought to be an expectation from their fans to play ‘the beautiful game’. We are Barnsley. The idea that we can football teams to death is a flawed model that failed under previous managers. Sounds idealistic. Lovely when it works a few times a season. But not so good when you lose over 20 games a year.

What ‘football’ did we produce last season for example? Holding leads late in games only to faff around with the ball in dangerous areas and squander results/points.

So yes, I like to see us run down the clock when 2-0 up away from home. Not sure Oxford scored because of that. More likely was the fact the lad was unmarked and had a free run at the ball.

We definitely dropped off in standard in the last 20 minutes of the game. Oxford with their multiple corner kicks, incessant long throws and long ball after long ball. It was a barrage of up and under football. I personally felt it was great to come through such a test and that with one of our poorer showings on the road this term, we picked up three points regardless.

The only thing that worries me about our season is the most obvious to all fans regardless of their ‘football view’ and that’s our inability to kill games off. We aren’t ruthless enough. If we’d gone 3-0 up when Nors went one-on-one, I think the last 20 minutes look very different. But that’s football.

Five points clear of 7th. Numerous games-in-hand. All the big spenders and their huge crowds still to visit Oakwell. Well-placed for an exciting finale. I don’t see much to moan about personally. But that’s probably a clue as to why ‘this’ is a discussion at all.

 

I enjoy these matchday threads. When did they start? Was it the COVID season? They make for a good read when I get home. Win, lose or draw.

There were a few substitions, a number of times when the trainer was on the pitch, time wasting with a couple of bookings for it. All adds up.

 

I would have replied more eloquently but the quote function seems to have disagreed with us both.

But just a note to point out that I never inferred otherwise, regards your entitlement to an opinion/view.

 

Could be wrong but i think @Redhelen may have started them. Think a couple of seasons back.

 

It certainly makes for a fun read at the end of an evening.

 

What,? Taking an age to take a goal kick, ? We are all aware of the composure side of it. But he takes wasting time to another level. Hence the booking.

 

And bookings add up!

 

Before them i think the forum got a bit messy during match days. This way everything match related is in one place.

 

I think it’s a good tactic when you’re being put under a lot of pressure irrespective of what minute of the match it is. Noticed one of the worst forms of time wasting is not mentioned and that’s goal celebrations. Most frustrating when you’ve conceded a goal and you can’t get the game started because the opposition are still in your half celebrating. As for Collins, it’s not how long it takes him to take them that concerns me, it’s where he kicks them to, often straight out of play.

 

It does, and I’ve seen similar games involving, and not involving us where there’s been nowhere near as much time added on

 

That is a concern, and shades of the Ismael season. When we won at lot of games by the odd goal (more often than not, 2-1), regardless of how we played. I remember us playing Luton and Huddersfield off the park when we played them away that season. The end results: 2-1 and 1-0.

We got to the play offs, but the missed chances in the home leg of the semi final cost us dearly.

 

Excellent victory last night. It's so easy to convert games in hand to three points every time, but the reality is often totally different. Also, good to see two lads getting their first goals for the club.
We're in the Play Offs position and some people complain. Two years ago, we were in the Championship Play Offs and some were complaining. A further couple of years previously, some people were complaining despite us finally winning promotion automatically in 22 years, achieving a club record number of points and being unbeaten at home for the entire season for the first time in 51 years. Three years previously, not only did we win the JP Trophy & promotion, but during the campaign, some not only complained, but insisted a team containing Hourihane, Winnall, Roberts, Hammill, Scowen and Mawson were the "worst Barnsley team I've ever seen".

But we invite the pressure that's the main point. Time wasted when not under pressure and adding minutes on is just bonkers imo. When If your unwilling to press for another goal. (As in the wasted opportunity from a corner with an extra 8 minutes just put on the clock) It gives them the freedom to come at us more. By the time Collins takes a goal kick. I could get a 1000 piece jigsaw done. Let alone get organised.

 

Think the ref got the added time spot on in our match. That lad who went off injured for them used about 3 mins alone. Personally I'm all in favour of adding time as punishment for blatant time wasting when the ball isn't in play.

 

We really need to stop blaming players for time wasting, especially Collins. Yes I dont like it either when we do it so early, don't mind late on, but we need to stop blaming players doing because it stems from the manager. Do you really think we'd do it so long if it wasn't an instruction? Everything comes from management.

 

Brad Collins is clearly awful at running the clock down….

He’s played 25 games this season and last night was his second booking. The first booking was in the 97th minute of a 1-0 win.

I’d say we’re ok as we are. Clearly he’s a better judge of how far he can take it than some on here.

If the tactic is to run the clock down and spoil when in front, so be it. We’ve had it done enough to us over the years.
