Wow! That's fantastic news. Bring on the 10000 and more. Might also stop the knockers knocking on the "they don't know what they're doing" door. Wow. Great CV and a real asset if true. CMAAHN.
I hope this is true, and more importantly Maurice Watkins takes a "hands-on" approach to being Chairman of BFC. Some years ago my immediate boss was Lord Ashburton, also called Sir John Baring. He was Chairman of several companies, including Barings Bank and also BP - yes, one of the largest multinational companies in the world. Having lunch sitting next to him, I asked him how he managed to combine all his various posts, and he replied that his work as Chairman of BP took just ONE day a week of his time!! Sadly, Barings went bust in the 1990's and he lost his life peerage at the same time. He was a really nice chap though, and he was Chairman of a charity for whom I worked. Sorry, waffle over!
Yes, Whitey. I worked for an educational charity providing free courses for 16 year olds at our centre, and the charity was the largest ordinary shareholder in Barings Bank. We lost shares to the value of £800 million when Barings went bust.
It could well have been, DT. I just thought he was given/appointed as Chairman of BP because of his ability, financial acumen and contacts!
The charity was The Baring Foundation, which still exists, and gives grants to social projects in poorer parts of the UK and the world (especially Africa). Maybe they'll accept an application from BFC!!!
Received a jail sentence, and then got bowel cancer. Was released from prison and I think is an after-dinner speaker!! I could never bring myself to watch the film about him.
Why would you have Leeson's number at work? He did seem to be made the scapegoat when his line managers got off scot free.
Came across him in my job. Lives in Galway and is still involved to some extent in the shares and commodities game.
I only know about Nick Leeson from bits I've read over the years but the impression I got is that he did what he did to try and recover the banks losses that he attributed to...in doing so it got wildly out of control and rather than recoup money he lost more and more...he wasn't trying to gain personally. Or have I missed something?
That's interesting, DT. Thanks. Despite what he did to Barings etc (and to the charity I worked for, which ultimately led to me leaving their employment after 17 years), I felt some sympathy for him. He got bowel cancer and his wife left him.
Yes, I think you're right Jedstar. Some parties thought he had/has a private stash of money somewhere, but I never believed that. Wow, didn't think my post about Barings would arouse so much interest!
I've always been quite fascinated by it...people use Nick Leeson's name as a synonym for fraudulent and dodgy business practices but I don't think he was the criminal everyone makes out, it was a unique situation and I reckon most people would have reacted in the same way. I suppose he could have just held his hands up well before it go so bad though, he would have lost his job but the bank would have recovered.
I did question how much time Mr Watkins could apportion to Barnsley given that people of his ilk are often involved with so many other companies, these are his current appointments: BRITISH ASSOCIATION FOR SPORT AND LAW LIMITED Active - Accounts Filed Director 31/12/2003 - THE GREYHOUND BOARD OF GREAT BRITAIN LIMITED Active - Accounts Filed Director 04/11/2008 - RFL (GOVERNING BODY) LIMITED Active - Accounts Filed Director 02/06/2006 - THE RUGBY FOOTBALL LEAGUE LIMITED Active - Accounts Filed Director 01/01/2005 - NEONRAIN LIMITED Active - Newly Incorporated Director 06/07/2012 - BRABNERS CHAFFE STREET LLP Active - Accounts Filed LLP Member 01/05/2006 - What do we reckon?
