lakes - go for Ambleside, we've stayed at Norwood House B&B and 2 Cambridge Villas opposite, both excellent with parking. spent last week there, but in a cottage.
We've also stayed in Askrigg in the Yorkshire Dales in cottages many times, not sure about hotel/b&b accommodation, but great little village, between Aysgarth and Hawes, home to the pub and surgery in tv series all creatures great and small.

Hasledean Hotel in Keswick is very good B&B £38-£43.

If your budget is unlimited the Borrowdale Hotel is excellent.

Easedale Lodge, Ambleside - very nice B&B, with friendly owners.

Some great restaurants and pubs in ambleside as well as plenty of places to go for a casual walk.

    Highly recommended.

I can recommend the Weatherspoon's hotel for a place to stay in Great Malvern :)

Hee hee. I can't help but feel embarrassed when I've slogged for miles with rucksack loaded with tent, sleeping bag, stove, food, spare clothes, bog paper, cans of Stella and boxes of red wine, only to finally get to the top of a hill and find someone in jeans with both grandparents and a push chair with toddler in tow. Oh how I'd love to be blissfully ignorant........

Is she still your girlfriend?. She must be forgiving is she is. Not sure my missus would forgive me taking her to Barrow. It would be like going on holiday to Rotherham. There's a very good reason why its a lot cheaper than the lakes. People want to go to the lakes. No-one wants to go to Barrow. Its a hole.

Bowness-on-Windermere is always nice; I've been twice and really enjoyed just doing nothing. Lovely.

If going to the Lakes, Ullswater is my paradise of choice (thats me on my bike there in the attached - does England get any more beautiful ?). Alsways went to Windemere when younger but Ullswater not as touristy. Proper sense of being really remote.

Aysgarth - loved the place and surrounding areas since I was 11. Used to spend many a summer in Westholme Campsite before the bstards changed it to a residents-only site. Many a drunken weekend there in my teens and beyond. The pub we used to frequent was the Palmer Flatts - not been for a couple of years. I was so taken with the Aysgarth that my mates knew it as "Andy's Kingdom" ..... so thats what we christened the view over the dale from the top of the campsite as !

    Wonderful memories.

One thing is for sure, whether you go to the Lakes or the Dales you'll be spoilt by beauty. Some people don't appreciate what we have right on our doorsteps.
