My late father stopped watching Barnsley during Machin's period in charge. In fact, the last game he attended is on the video linked to this thread, the victory over Watford in 1991. I think @JLWBigLil sums it up really well, the first 18 months were good. He got us out of the mire to stay up with some effective signings and obviously we just didn't have quite enough to make the playoffs the following season, a lack of goals probably did for us as the defence was superb. The next two seasons though were turgid. Admittedly we lost some good players for some decent money, but replacements were hit and miss and the style of play we adopted was boring to watch. In balance, he did sign some players who were pivotal in our greatest ever season, Redfearn, Davis for example, and he gave opportunities to Liddell, Watson too. But I'd have to question the judgement of a man who basically released Nicky Eaden from the club, whose Barnsley career was rescued when Viv Anderson and Danny Wilson arrived.
