If you were a club looking around at another clubs player you would give some pointers to a jounalist who would then report it as an exclusive in the paper. You would hope that the player and his agent would see this. If the player was interested it may turn his head. You would also know that his club would see it so you would have to put in some kind of price. You would suggest a below market value price but you would need to get the board thinking. They will reply in the media saying that they are not looking to sell the player and that the player is a part of the club. From the strentgh of there reply you will know how much money you would need to offer if you wanted to do business. Why are you having a go at the club when all this is instigated by someone else?
Who is the scout that is advising Palace? Last year they offered £500k for Done and this year they're talking about £600k for Mellis. From one extreme to the other!
Re: Get yourself off to bed, young man Firstly, 600k is ridiculous valuation for a player of Jacob's ability. As for contracts, I'm as excited as anyone about the coming season but let's not run before we can walk. 3 months ago we were preparing an operational strategy for relegation and a league one budget. We have secured players for the coming season and prioritised contracts accordingly. To extend those of Jacob, Dawg, Perks etc is to be committing finances we have not yet earned. I think a healthy start to this season and a positive indication of where we will be trading the following term, will see negotiations open with the players who are winding down.
We should be commanding a fee of between £1.5m-£3m from a Premier League club for Mellis (even with less than 12 months on his contract). Palace should hold back until January, £600,000 would be about right. If you have your players/assets tied down on a contract, they will increase in value. For example, Cranie and Steele could have gone to other championship clubs this summer for for a combined fee of £0. If these clubs/other clubs become interested in them in the future (January/next summer etc) we can now command a transfer fee, which would bring revenue into the club. I am 100% confident that the new chairman/Chief Executive are aware of this, they immediately tied 2 key players down on 2 year deals and signed Jennings on a 3 year deal. Vaz Te, Butterfield etc were potentially big financial assets (especially when a premier league club becomes interested) for the club. Although they did make the club a profit, I believe we could have got more money for Butterfield if his contract hadn't expired, and more money for Vaz Te if he didn't have 5/6 months left on his contract. I bet player agents are a right pain in the arse though, but with Mansfords experience in the industry, we might be one step ahead now.
Replace Dagnall with Golbourne and I agree. All those out of contract in 12 months should be getting 2 year extensions so they are under contract until the summer of 2016. As for Dagnall he's a big season ahead of him if he's to get a new contract.
In what way am I having a go at the club? I am commenting on the 'reported' valuation and our past record in the transfer market. Unless you've slept through the last ten years or so you will know we don't have a brilliant reputation as tough negotiators where contracts and transfers are concerned however I did counter that by saying "Hopefully that is going to change now".
The length of the contract seems to have a massive affect on the valuation of the player. In the premier league they don't seem to like top assets to go below 24 month. They seem indicate that a players contract needs to be sorted at that stage or sold to protect the clubs interests.
If we went down those players would be sold on no problem. Anyway be positive we aren't going to get relegated
Applogies, I thought you were implying that the club were going to be same old same old. I was just defending the new regime by saying I thought the were doing things the right way. I do think every player will still have a price tag on him though but I hope now that we wont give in as quick in order to gain a quick buck.
Zaha - £15m Ince - reported figures around £8m Gayle (GAYLE?!?) - £6m plus Will Hughes - Big money talked about, millions Mellis - 600k bid. I know the other players may be considered more the finished article, or have more potential, but not a minimum of ten times as much! Insulting offer that should be dismissed out of hand. There's at least £1.5m worth of player there and given another season to develop, easily £2.5 - 3.5m.
Could also include a relegation clause in contracts. I am sure the board will work something out because I reckon it is one of Flickers 'assurances' - probably fed up of trying to build a team, then letting players contracts run down, and losing them half way through the season/end of season for a price that doesn't reflect the true value of the players ability.
Time to stand up and show we as a club have have changed!! 600k, put the phone down on them, £3 million pound....we could maybe then sit and discuss this + add ons for a VERY 'young and talented' player!!!
