The nerves, the build up, the drizzle, every scarf in the ponte being raised...

...above the heads of the pontefract road end faithful. I was directly behind Bradford's shot that hit the post and once that had happened I knew it was going to be our day. When Clint's goal went in the Ponte went wild and I remember falling into the row in front and being on the floor. I'm never one to encourage encroachment on to the pitch but there was nothing stopping me that day. In the days before mobile phones I lost my mates completely and remember being caught up in a crowd that had John Hendrie on their shoulders. After the game I got home just to double check the table on teletext and then it was straight into town for an all nighter! Remember the singing of Cheer up Mark McGhee all round town and Martin Bullock appearing in the DJ box in Regent's Park and I planted a massive smacker on him! What a day. Hopefully we'll see that day once again.

Sitting in the East stand before kickoff, not being able to talk..........

far too nervous, my son 10 at the time, said he felt sick, the tension was unbearable head banging, heart thudding and palms sweating, remember thinking only Barnsley could throw this chance away, at the final whistle my son in my arms crying, saying "Clint's done it Dad, we're up Dad, Clint's done it", ( sniff ).

I was just turned 11 at the time. We'd been in the Hoyle Mill pub with my dad since about 1 o'clock. Everybody was getting their face painted, even the adults.

I don't remember much about the game itself, it was a blur.. I remember Clint's goal... everyone on the pitch... the noise... flags, scarves.. school on the monday in my Barnsley shirt.

I doubt I'll ever experience anything like that ever again.

Thing I remember most about it ...

for weeks after I would just break into a smile for no 'apparent' reason.

married to an American girl at the time, she loved it, but I don't think she could appreciate the enormity of what it meant for a team like

Barnsley to be in the Prem, or how it felt to have supported something for most of your life and to finally see it come good.

Even now, all these years on, i can still feel it .... onther than the birth of my kids [one due today :) :) :) ] the happiest moment of my life.

Stood up in the Ponty End

Tears running down my face , as I remembered all those home defeats against the likes of Barrow , Workington , Southport , Aldershot , thinking to myself , "Dad , we finally did it ". Went home to my house-bound father's bungalow . We didn't say anything , just hugged one another . My late father had started taking me down to Oakwell in the sixties and we never dreamt that this day would ever come .
Later that evening , we attended a family do in Rotherham . I wore my "It's Just Like Watching Brazil" shirt and never had to buy a drink all evening . Complete strangers kept coming up to me , saying how proud & pleased they were with the club's achievements and insisting on buying me yet another drink . The fact that their club had been relegated to the bottom division didn't affect their generosity .
For weeks afterwards , Hallam FM kept repeating the commentary of Clint's goal as I was going to work in a morning . Every time it was on , I just started laughing and crying .

    Bizarrely

Before the match I was calm as owt. I was convinced that we'd win hands down and that promotion was a formality. I spend days beforehand telling everyone that they had nowt to worry about and it was all in the bag ...

As the minutes ticked by my stomach was in knots!

I'm the other way round now though ... I keep imagining being 1-0 down to Leicester as the news comes in that Leeds are thumping Ipswich and that West Brom have dropped out of the play-offs and will need 3 points against us on the last day.

I just hope that Derby are in with a shout of automatic come the last match, the last thing we want is them going through the motions.

If we stay up this season

It will be as a good as a promotion to me . Whatever the rights and wrongs of Andy Ritchie's sacking are , the club was struggling and appeared to be heading back down to the ale house league . A new manager , who very few wanted ( myself included ) , appointed and some dire football on display only enhanced the gloom .
However , despite all that , we're in with a fighting chance of avoiding the drop . Hopefully , this weekend's results will banish our fears once and for all .
For me , staying in the Championship would be a huge success for everyone connected with the club .

We looked to be heading back down 2 weeks ago, the feeling before the Birmingham game in the stands seemed to be one of resignation.

    I think that's a fair comment

After the Ipswich game , I thought we were as good as down . I'm still not counting my chickens , though .
